Why Does EvE Online not have a Movie? Not video Clips, A Movie.

A movie doesn't automatically turn into a blockbuster, no matter how good it is. In order to become a worldwide success, a movie needs to be known, even before it's even in theaters - it's all about marketing.

The Warcraft Movie, if it's going to be a success will be just that mostly because many people know (World of) Warcraft. Dozens of millions of people have played the games, and many more know about them at least. And then, by being a success in the first place, the movie has the chance to attract new players.

With Eve, it's different. Only few people play this game, and those who don't, may have heard the strangest things about it. In order for an Eve movie not to fall flat on it's face, a lot of money would need to be invested in marketing.

Then of course, I don't think neither CCP, nor the Eve community will be able to just conjure up $100M to make a silly movie, like Activision-Blizzard can.

A TV/VoD (mini-)series on the other hand does sound much more feasible. Get a good writer, hook up with Netflix and and see what happens. But even then - it's probably not going to help the game much. I'd rather have CCP concentrate on the game more - maybe put a bit more effort into conventional marketing and not branch out too far.

Assume you meant "niche"; I'm pretty sure one thing we could all agree is that EVE online does not appeal to the "nice" part of the population. Blink

Baltasar Kormakur purchased the TV rights from CCP Games. He is kind of busy right now.

Making movies is a business. To make money a movie must be watched by tons of people and investors only invest on IPs which already have been bought by tons of people.

EVE Online is almost irrelevant on the mass media scale. A Hollywood film wouldn't break even not even if every EVE player ever watched the film and bought the DVDs and every piece of merchandise twice.

So who's left to make the film? Some European producer, which means g-bye to almost any chances of reaching a global market which in turns renders potential profit even smaller.

So the reason why there is no EVE film and likely will never be is: not profitable enough.

There's been some talks about a EVE mini-series for TV since some years ago; that's almost unavoidable when some CCP top brass are TV people (Hilmar, Seagull) but then again we meet the profitability thing. TV is both cheaper to produce and easier to market (a series can be sold years after production), but then you have issues with the IP. Is EVE interesting enough to a wide audience? Does it have sex (no) romance (no) action (kinda) violence (ship explosions for 50 minutes?) politics (kinda) philosophy (cough, cough) as to interest someone who doesn't knows what is EVE Online? Is the backstory accessible or familiar to newcomers?

I would call it moot. Maybe someone risk his money for it, eventually, but... EVE is a spaceships game. That is really hard to convey without either ignoring spaceships and going for people stories (would that be EVE?) or being really freak in what drives and interests the mass audiences (people, not hardware).

CCP is still working on a playable game, and you want a movie?
