Download on demand is worthless garbage feature

I have it as disabled as I can -- launcher set to download all resources and allowed to complete before any clients are ever started.

It still spins some clients on "Loading Resources" for upwards of **20 ACTUAL ******* MINUTES** when I try to logon several (10+) clients in quick succession. It takes upwards of a minute for even single clients to load one at a time or with no other clients running.

Most of the delay is before the character select screen appears after logon. WHAT DOES IT EVEN HAVE TO LOAD FOR CHARACTER SELECT?

It doesn't enable a single thing I use or add anything to the game.

Thank you for greatly degrading the player experience with this useless garbage.

result of rescache.exe, fwiw

It works fine for me, and allowed me to get in-game much quicker rather than waiting for the full download to complete. I have 50 meg internet which helps.

I hope you understand and appreciate that starting 10 clients at the same time is not a normal use case we optimize for. Can you provide details on your machine; hard drives, CPU, GPU, memory, internal and external network, etc, please. Can you also provide an I/O and network profile for when you start 10 clients.

You should probably increase the built-in delay between client launching to more than 2 seconds as your IO can't handle the load .

Also. Amok :p

Thank you for ruining the player experience by sounding off on an optional feature that helps many players in 99% of the situations they deal with.

Saying the "player experience" has been degraded is idiotic as what you should have said is "my experience".

Now as it your issue:

- If the individual accounts are not logging after a few minutes, you can cancel them individually in the launcher itself and restart them.

- Set the time between client launches to something between 10-15 seconds.

- Click the individual launch buttons and not the "launch all selected".

There, I was a hundred times more useful to this problem than you sounding off how CCP has ruined the game because you can't log in 10 toons within a minute of one another.

Or perhaps you would like us to go back to the old launcher where each ******** account had to be logged in one at a time and only after ever single resource had been downloaded (which on patch day for some people could take over an hour). Actually now that I type that, I can totally see how the player experience has been degraded with the new download on demand feature. You sir are one hundred and ten percent right, now excuse me while I go get my morning coffee and get ready for a day of dealing with people like you at work.

CPUs: 2x Xeon X5650 running with 185MHz base clock (4070MHz all core turbo, 4255MHz 2 core per socket turbo)
GPU: EVGA GTX-980 Hydro Copper running with 1556MHz core / 8002MHz mem
RAM: 48GB in 6 channels of 8GB DIMM running at DDR-1572
Disks: OS/EVE/shared cache on direct attached RAID-1 SSD of Crucial_CT256MX100SSD1
Internal Network: Switched 1GbE to router and Infiniband 10Gbps for NAS
External Network: ADSL 7200Kbps / 766Kbps

Notes on I/O profile --
Issue is reproducible with all Eve client data cached in RAM (run clients for full day -> close after downtime -> restart -> filesystem cache is warm with essentially all Eve-related data)

"iostat -x 1 -k" confirms no significant read or write activity actually hitting the physical disks, fewer than 1000 read I/Os issued to disks over 10 minute interval in which 12 clients are started

I am pretty sure this eliminates disk I/O as a potential bottleneck, but I suppose it could be a lock contention issue or something?

Network profile --
After submitting username/password and before reaching the character select screen, network activity peaks at 5.67Mbps RX and hovers around 5Mbps RX from a mixed bag of cloudfront and aws hosts until clients start progressing to the logon screen.

This network activity is concurrent with the download on demand spinner animating on all clients (i.e. "the problem").

5+Mbps on the shared ADSL 7200Kbps downstream link is effectively saturated so I would say this burst of network activity is probably the issue.

I am starting the clients manually after using the old launcher to patch and update shared cache.

I am pretty sure my system can handle the I/O load, particularly as the issue is fully reproducible with the entire Eve tree cached to the point that it observably doesn't touch disk :P

THANKS FANBOY, BUT I'M NOT EVEN USING THE NEW LAUNCHER

DOWNLOAD ON DEMAND ISN'T OPTIONAL

EVEN WHEN YOU ARE USING THE OLD LAUNCHER AND FULLY DOWNLOADING EVERY SINGLE RESOURCE

I FEEL LIKE I SAID I WAS DOING EXACTLY THIS IN THE FIRST FUCKIN' LINE OF THE OP BUT I GUESS YOU COULDN'T BE ASSED TO READ EVEN THAT FAR BEFORE YOU STARTED SPERGIN'

ANYWAY DRINK ****

Any change when using the new launcher to start up stuff?
