Osmium Thoughts?

Hi all,

A while ago, I saw someone post a link to Osmium so I was playing around with it the other day and I like it, but I have noticed that even under the Popular Fits, there less than 10 votes for a fit with few comments.

Does this mean the site isn't often visited and isn't really used?

Other than some initial formatting issues that I took care of, I do like it, but wanted to know what you guys thought...

It sounds plausible enough tonight, but wait until tomorrow. Wait for the common sense of the morning.

It's an infant site relatively speaking to Eve so it's no surprise there are not a lot of comments and/or votes. The fitting tool is convenient for when I am not on a box that has PYFA/EFT installed but I don't really use it to search for fits.

Speaking of EFT, I went to install it a while ago and Norton blocks and removes the install file.

Do you have a link you could share?

Osmium completely replaced EFT for me. It is quick, easy and useable in-game.

I wouldn't suggest even looking at the saved fits on there unless you simply had no idea where to start with a certain hull.

Osmium really isn't that great.

It's new, but development's pretty much aborted as near as I can tell.

The lack of comments and votes is due to the extremely obtuse hoops you have to jump through to be able to comment and vote in the first place. I followed their guidelines as best I was able, and I still forgot or messed something up somewhere and can't vote on anything. That's more effort than I want to bother with, and I'm not the only one - nobody votes or comments on anything because of their restrictions.

But the final nail in the coffin for me is the lack of sorting options. There's a lot of crap polluting osmium's database - particularly people adding links / billions of isk in implants / overheating everything / billions of isk in officer mods to artificially inflate the DPS, EHP, - all numbers that you'll see while browsing. Conveniently the isk display seems to break if they go over a certain threshold so you can't even tell at a glance that way.

And you can't screen that stuff out using sort options, or sort by anything at all except expansion release dates - Even though they have a number of sorting options on the main page already!

Whatever osmium was attempting to be or do, the people working on it seem to have abandoned it months ago. What's left is the bare minimum in functionality and definitely does not get my vote for anything.

I actually use google's cache results to pull old battleclinic fits moreso than I bother with Osmium.

And for making fits I still switch between pyfa or eft.

tl;dr Site looks nice, but it's unfinished, lacks basic functionality, and doesn't seem to have been worked on at all since it made its debut. If I were a betting man, I'd put my money on a competitor popping up and doing what osmium isn't.

Well tbh, the sites a fitting tool mostly, not a commenting and/or sharing tool of fits. Battleclinic was just as useless to get goodd fits anyways.

Thanks for the link. Also, thanks for all of the responses. Very interesting...

I started using Osmium because people were detailing their ship fitting in the forums and making some pretty grandiose claims about how much DPS or tanking it had. After putting their exact fittings into Osmium and finding that it was...well...somewhat exaggerated, I've started to ignore certain players...haha.

It sounds plausible enough tonight, but wait until tomorrow. Wait for the common sense of the morning.

I really like Osmium and use it a lot, although as already mentioned, the restrictions to vote and comment are ridiculous. I used it a while before trying to verify my API and after I did so, all my fitting where gone and my screen name had changed. So I deleted the verification and it works great again.

Also, it is not a great site for sharing fits due to the mentioned reasons. But I can access it from everywhere, the short search term functionality makes it fast (just search for e.g. eanm), I can make multiple presets for one fitting nice damage graph to figure out which crystals to pack.
Still I search for fits on battleclinic and then switch to osmium. But I use it as private fitting tool and only shared one fit.

Oh, and there is an option so only your corp members can see your fitting. Great for sharing. Only thing missing would be the new export directly to Eve option. But since it seems to be abandoned (Which I did not knew), I guess this won't happen.
