Ganking alleged AFK miners in Hi-Sec 0.5 - 1.0

I've been playing EVE for several years and the one thing I can't wrap my head around is why it's ok and even encouraged to gank Hi-Sec solo miners. There's the ever-popular Hulkageddon not to mention several corps dedicated to just that.

Outright lawlessness is allowed in low and null sec. Why can't we keep these activities there?

Folks mine in Hi-Sec believing it to be safer than low or null. It should be.

My biggest argument is that the cost of replacing a fully rigged and loaded Hulk isn't insignificant, not to mention having to replace your Implants because the gankers can't be satisfied with destroying just your ship. Insurance only pays for the ship and there is none for the Implants, the cost of which can be nearly a billion for a good set. I still have to buy or make the rigs and modules that I am unable to recover from my wreck. The cost of replacing the gankers' ships (usually nothing more than destroyers because Concord is going to kill, but not pod, them) is significantly less. I can afford to replace that ship only as long as I have isk. ISK isn't unlimited. Eventually it, too, runs out.

Why does CCP condone and encourage this activity?

The only reason I've heard is that there is a scourge of 'AFK Miners.' Miners who utilize BOT Programs, or, for whatever reason, are AFK while mining. If that's true then find a way to detect those miners using software and deal with them without ruining the experience for those players who are working to advance in the game.

As far as the gankers that participate in these activities, as I said lawlessness is allowed, encouraged, and highly rewarded in low and null sec, however, should be discouraged in hi-sec. The cost of replacing the gankers equipment will never as high as the solo miner. The cost to their future in hi-sec should, therefore, be extreme.

Hi-Sec ganking of miners needs to be punished in such a way as to make it immediately undesirable and quickly impossible to participate in.

In order to achieve this, the security status of an individual caught ganking in Hi-Sec is set immediately and permanently to yellow/suspect. A second offence get's them permanently flagged red/criminal to be killed on first contact within the region where they committed the offense.

Everyone playing this game wants to have an enjoyable experience and will choose the level of risk they are willing to take while playing. Ganking lone miners in Hi-Sec makes their experience less enjoyable by imposing unreasonable expenses that on one else playing has to incur.

Highsec is safer than lowsec, which is safer than nullsec (based on the risks under the game mechanics. All areas can be safe if you make them safe) but nowhere in space is perfectly safe (cloaky is the closest you get if you are undocked) and CCP doesn't condone and encourage any specific action; they provide the environment for us to use as we choose.

So if you don't want to replace a Hulk and implants, but want to mine AFK'ish, then use a tanked Skiff or Procurer instead.

If you are AFK'ish, then the slightly longer time needed to mine the ore is hardly important, but a Skiff is much safer in exhumers, or a Procurer as an AFK'ish barge choice.

A Hulk is fine if you are not going to be AFK.

Edit:
On the issue of bots, CCP Team Security regularly ban botters. There are some figures in this presentation from FanFest 2014 and the 2015 update is available too:

You chose to AFK in a deadspace-fit Hulk in 0.6 space with a 1 billion ISK pod inside. Sounds like the one who chose the level of risk and the amount of expenses you incurred was you yourself.

Keep EVE dangerous.

CCP don't encourage it, in fact they've made several nerfs to it over the years to make it more difficult.

You'd think they would encourage it though, seeing as players who are ganked in highsec are more likely to stay subbed to the game.

Edit: Just saw your lossmail, ouch! I'm sure you won't make that mistake again.

@ISD pls lock this repetitive tear thread Cool EDIT: NO NEED TO LOCK THIS... DON'T DO EET

You decided to afk, so you ended up not caring about your ship and pod (otherwise you'd have docked up instead of mining)

That loss is 100% your fault, no one else's Cool

Absolutely your fault for not utilizing tools to check player history for ganks as they enter system (negative sec status, zkillboard). If you're not monitoring local and you die to a gank, it's your fault. All of Eve is never safe, you undock, you risk dying.

When you undock there is risk. Highsec is technically the safest. However, it is not 100% safe. You still run the risk of people trying to kill you, its just much more rare for them to try.

Honestly Null is the safest place to pve when you consider risk vs reward. In null you know someone is either an enemy or they are not. You normally have advanced intel if someone is in the area. And, in terms of mining, the ore selection is far superior.

The only thing highsec is good for, in my opinion, is shopping and selling loot.

Sometimes you are the squirrel and sometimes you are the nut. Today, you are the nut and the squirrel is hungry.

Their biggest argument is "FUN".

EVE is a sandbox game, where CCP has designed some ships and has otherwise decided to leave us alone to do whatever we want, with minimal intervention (the only intervention is for the offenses that will result in bans). Like it or not, this is the game, and you're free to play or not play.

Some interactions are simple: pirates will just shoot you.

Others are a bit more complex: if you have 100 million loot in a transport ship that can be killed by a 500k destroyer, that destroyer WILL shoot your transport and take the loot from its wreck.

And finally, other actions are subtle: CODE is an organized "protection racket"; they spew a bunch of nonsense in order to provoke a reaction for entertainment, but the idea is to convince as many people as they can to pay them the "permit" fee, so they can make money.

Why do we behave this way? Because it's a game. Grand Theft Auto (GTA) V was very popular; the (evil) Empire side in the Star Wars The Old Republic MMO has always had about 3:1 more players than the Republic side, Horde players outnumber Alliance players in WoW... and girls like bad guys.

Sorry that you're a good guy.

Looks to me like you had no mining permit, which obviously makes you the criminal. Why would you steal our ore and then even make a thread about it on the forums?

Now,

- recompute your mining profits if you switch to the tank mining barge (fitted for TANK) instead of the weakest one,

- load a Higgs Anchor rig on your ship and keep it aligned and at max speed while mining,

- add CODE to your People and Places as a red contact

- make sure to keep the chat channel window for Local open and tall enough so you can see if a whole fleet of -10.0 red flashing "criminal status" pirates, or anyone from CODE, enters the system

- beware of any "innocent" "newbie" in a Venture trying to mine near your ship, as they can be the "warp to" scout

- and, never go afk

Basically, learn from your mistakes, instead of asking CCP to "fix" the game to fit your play style.

there could be several reasons for it but first a brief history:

When EvE released ganking was controlled but as weapons and ships were upgraded it hecame possible to oneshot the odd ship now and then. CCP was pretty quick to rebuffer or buff to stamp it out.

Nullsec was pretty dangerous and low was very dangerous. highsec was relatively safe in comparison. As Oveur the lead dev at the time stated "hghsec is supposed to be relatively safe".

At some stage CCP and the null sec people began to breach the cardinal rule of not only game development but virtually every competitive based business in the world and began mixing business with pleasure. they began hiring from their own customer base, interacting in game inside corporations and alliances, resulting in highly biased development decisions (which ultimately led to the goons taking over all of EvE, including forums and CSM) and devs dropping game changing items (miner 2 bpo etc)'.

by now the game was incurably corrupted. any reasoning to rebalance it was shouted down on forums or locked by a goon. after a while everyone who cared either left the game, was too intimidated to post on forums or just accepted the status quo.

possible reasons they wont fix it:

1: stacked CSM full of null sec people
2: devs too scared to change it fearing goons might unsub for a month dropping income by 99%
3: game is just too FUBAR now. when you have destroyers and crusiers doing battleship dps and costing almost nothing how do you stop ganking?

I don't understand, it's a game. You got pantsed by somebody. Instead of plotting revenge and vowing to do better the next time around you lobby mommy for a rule change? I just don't get it, it's sad.
