I was just wondering if there is a big difference between the two.

Of course there is, Rockets are smaller, Rocket launcher are smaller for smaller ships, they can hit smaller targets better.
Missile have more Range, they fly longer time, so they have longer distance and do more damage. Try fit a Raven with rocket launcher instead Cruise Missiles Launcher and you will start laughing.

Missiles also don't hit ships with small signatures as well.

If your ship is small and fast, use rockets.

If your ship is cruiser sized or bigger, use missiles.

It depends on what you want to do really.

If you don't want to get involved in PvP then there's no reason at all to train rockets. If you do then you picked the right race as the Vengeance is nice these days.

Missiles cover both PvP and PVE. The skilltree is much the same as turrets, although rockets and bombs aren't.

To clarify, I hope:

Rockets are short-range frigate-class missiles. They are not affected by the Guided Missile Precision skill which reduces explosion radius.

Light Missiles are long range frigate-class missiles. They are affected by the Guided Missile Precision skill which reduces explosion radius.

Rockets are especially good for PvP and a must for all frigates with split weapons (missiles and turrets). Light missiles are especially good for PvE, and missiles-only frigates.

Light missiles are especially deadly when used in an Assault Launcher (don't confuse with a Heavy Assault Launcher) fitted to a cruiser. A ship like a Caracal can rain death on frigates and destroyers, but isn't as effective against cruisers or larger ships when fitted this way.

For level 1 missions, I like to use a Kestrel with Standard Missiles and 'Malkuth' Standard Missile Launchers, as it has a lot of range and speed with an afterburner, so it can stay out out of the range of NPC. For level 2 missions, I like to use a Caracal with Assault Launchers in the same way. Heavy missiles are not needed until level 3 missions when you are in a battlecruiser.
