For some reason I can't swipe anything from containers belonging to another player. I can open them and view the contents but clicking and dragging doesn't do anything, and neither does the 'loot all' button. I was under the impression I could loot these and would get a criminal timer. Anyone know what the problem could be? I'm within 500m of the containers btw.

Safety set to yellow?
If it's green it's probably not going to let you take anything.

Good luck in your new calling as a space janitor.
Much fun can come of it.

Preferred the old system whereby only the corp could attack. Suspect system ruined a lot of shenanigans. Pirate

True, but being wily and keeping the d-scan button hot and sticky still makes this viable.
Plus, it's kind of fun when you get a nice fat fish on the line and some destroyer comes in to try and save the princess.
It keeps things interesting.

Were I a real man I'd be plying this trade in systems like Osmon where both victims and competition are both abundant.
I'm not that manly though. I know full well what happens when two suspect baiters land in the same pocket.
A bewildered mission bear watches in horror as a pair of flashy things tear each apart over who gets the right to swipe metal scraps in that there deadspace pocket.

My advice to OP is to find a fairly well frequented hub of level 3/4 missions and haunt that system and all adjacent systems. Set up many safe spots and scan down the marks at your leisure.

That, and move when you see Leffy. He will eat you.
