Well, here it is folks, we've officially been beaten to it!

Starwars Galaxies has implemented atmospheric flight. If I interpret the context of that article correctly, they've expended the effort to implement it even though the game is scheduled to be shut down on the 15th of December.

Makes you wonder what it would be like to be a customer of a company so dedicated it will create and roll out a major feature of gameplay you've been requesting for ages, even though its got a shutdown date less then 6 months away...must be nice...

I would guess they built it so they can test it for some future project they're working on.

Does railgun ammunition come in Hollow Point?

That's kind of funny and sad at the same time.

Mate, that is hilarious. Also, isn't it obvious that this game's company uses this as a testing ground? Omg, imagine the ragequiters yelling "I am not an alpha tester for free"... wait, can you ragequit a game that is being shutdown?

I think its a wonderful show of dedication by the team. The game is completely F2P now, and it'll in 3 months exactly from now. The fact that the devs would pick and release that particular feature shows that they really care about the game, and even if they were held back for financial reasons when it was their income stream, now that the bonds are gone, they'll do it for the love of the game.

Its interesting that you are the second person in this thread to suggest they are using it as an alpha test. I know bugger all about SWG, and took it at face value. What exactly is SOE creating that might use the SWG engine in this way?

Company might use just the engine.

Xearal's respone feels like subtle sarcasm - CCP also uses eve to test Incarna technology.

Lol SOE just stole this from the SWGemu dev team. P I'm merely joking, but it wouldn't surprise me.

It was probably in development anyway when the closure was announced, so they figured that they may as well release it anyway - whether it was ready or not.

Or maybe the game developers were just kept in the dark that Lucas Arts wouldn’t extend the license on their IP.

I find it very hard to believe that a company would continue to commit resources to development if they knew they were getting axed. I find it more likely that they were already developing the content – and continue to release content because the majority of the content is there.

Actually, what I find it amazing that the player base was given six months notice on it’s closure… instead of the two week warning that we got with the NGE.

Kind of funny really considering the game shuts down forever in a few months...

Oh and we used a little officer mods. KIDDING! We used a lot of officers mods, A LOT! Because we don’t :censored: around in low-sec.

Even funnier considering a few years ago Lucas Arts swore SWG would remain even with TOR live.

lol, yeah they have been using swg as a test platform ever since the NGE went live.

Remember those billboards near the markets and cantinas? they were supposed to show advertisements from paid sponsors

and atmospheric flight was always a pipedream, I'm sure they just want to throw it in in its buggy state just to gift the remaining players.

the problem was and always had been that SWG's ground game has no Z axis (altitude), thats why your toon couldn't jump and thats why atmospheric flight never worked

It was something they have been working on forever, but never could get right. They decided to release it anyway since it is shutting down, but it doesn't have much functionality. I am going to assume since you used the word dedication in the same post speaking of SWG, that you either have never played it or haven't played it in many years. Ive played it off and on since it was released and can safely say the devs on SWG were the worst of any MMO ive ever played; and I have been playing MMOs since the Ultima Online beta.

Got it in one. From the outside at least, it looks like a pretty altruistic gesture.
