Questions Regarding Gang PvP Ships

I have played for about a month now, I've got skills I've trained all over the place but that's not really my issue, as I'm willing to train into whatever I need as time is no issue. I've been looking around for some ideas regarding ships in gang PvP. I currently have a really basic Atron with some blasters an mwd, scram, and web. I also have a coercer with some lasers and some other basic fits. Before my first coercer got blown up (bad situation more than bad piloting) it was doing fine, and until I've trained into covops, I would appreciate some insight from the much more experienced PvP player base.

Available ships for me atm: Gallente upto cruiser (t1's only, though my Drone skills are very lacking), amarr upto battlecruiser (t1's only), caldari upto battlecruiser (t1's for all but frigates which i can covop pilot as of the 31st), no minmatar at all

Available fittings: Lasers (small and medium), hybrids (small and medium), missiles (small and medium), rockets, torpedoes. All t1 as I have no access to t2 equipment

Specific questions: (Answers to these are nice but all advice is majorly appreciated)

-Is the coercer as a ship very viable? It's cheap and easy enough to fit.

-I doubt BC's are viable, as it is called "small gang" but does that include cruisers, or are cruisers viable as well?

-What ships would put out the most damage in such a scenario?

-Would a covops ship help in these cases? (I'm training it either way for different reasons, but if it were viable in these situations that would be great.)

-What advice would you give in those situations that suddenly go awry? (like a sudden group appearing that is far superior?)

Thanks in advance for any and all help you may give Big smile

The answer to everything is it depends.

Some questions to your specific answers in order;

The Coercer is viable, but difficult to use effectively with only 2 mids. Too slow and not enough mids for tackle, if you are in range it has pretty good range and application. DPS isnt anything spectacular.

Small gang refers to fleet size, not ship size, you can have a small gang BS roam.

In what scenario? Dreadnoughts and super carriers do lots of damage. Gallente blaster boats are often DPS kings/among the top of their respective classes (Catalyst, Thorax, and Brutix for example)

Covops frigates are great for scouting and scanning. Stealth bombers are good for scouting and engaging heavier targets. Both are flimsy and explode when contacted by space dust. If you are in low sec you have to choose targets wisely or fight away from gates and stations.

Awry isnt very descriptive. But some of your options include Lerooooy'ing, scattering, kiting (Dependent on your and enemy ships), rage quitting, accusing the enemies of blobbing in local and Jita scamming.

I would recommend in tech I and cheap: Cormorant for destroyers, Punisher for frigates.

Imperial Navy Slicer if it's within budget is pretty good. Navy faction, but still relatively cheap. I used to fit them entirely for 20m isk, but I think they've jumped in price since, so maybe 25-30m isk.

After that, you're starting to get into the 50m+ isk faction frigates or tech3/command/interdiction destroyers.

Garmur, Svipul, Confessor, Stork, Dramiel, etc. are all really good, but also expensive. You can easily blow 120m isk with one of these.

if you're in a gang and you have low skills, EWAR is always useful.

A Maulus or Griffin can really be a great addition to any small gang.
