hi good people,

looking for a jackdaw fit (fits) for: low sec ratting. must be able to destroy rats at range, so if anyone that lands on belt is too powerful for me to take on, I can always warp off. also need a fit to run 3 out of 10's and 4 out of 10's in BR and Sansha space, again, with the idea of putting distance against me and npc's and switching between attack mode and defense mode if I get overwhelmed.

rockets and lms are fine, toon has great missile skills. price is no problem. (within reasonable limits) I'm ratting currently on a caracal passive tank shield and was hoping jackdaw was a better option to potentially be able equip a probe launcher and scan down combat sites.

Do you not have any suggestions to start the discussion off, rather than us spoon-feed you like an oversized baby?

But I am offering positive advice - to help you, particularly if you've bought a character, learn how to devise fits yourself. Think about it like this, with these two scenarios:

A. You ask for a fitting, and someone here obliges and gives you a fit, just like that, end of story.

B. You ask for a fitting, and *provide something that you've come up with*. Doesn't matter if it's complete garbage! Others here will say "Hey, maybe you could replace...for...because it just doesn't work very well", or "Have you considered trying ... instead of...?"

In which scenario will your knowledge of the game be pushed and developed, and which one will it not? I'm not trying to browbeat you, but - particularly if you're a new player to EVE - the most important skill to be learnt is that of self-reliance and inquisitiveness :)

I know you asked a load of questions in your OP, but let's focus on the Jackdaw fitting for now: any ideas about how you might go about fitting it to get the best out of your skills?

It's really sad if you think that I am lecturing you - I'm trying to engage you here, and help develop skills that will linger on long after the Jackdaw has gone boom.

It's not just me, either, who has this viewpoint - in the sticky "New to Ships and Modules? Read here first and get a reward!" (at the top of this very forum), CCP Spitfire does a great example of how to ask for fitting suggestions.

Anyway, good luck - my advice would be to fit for the traits of the ship. Light missiles and small or medium shield booster would probably be the way to go.

He could have said it with a bit more tact, but it is hardly uncalled for. I agree with everything he said, it's generally pointless to just post fits.
If you don't want to have a conversation so we have a better understanding of how you play, then figure it out yourself.

For future reference, if I ask for a fit it's because I hoped to get more than one to compare, also (and most important I think) because a new player like me (and many others) don't have knowledge of the MAJORITY OF MODULES (and there's a shitload) that come into play when it comes to fitting a ship, with that in mind, I was hoping to compare different fits in the tranquility of my desktop to see which modules were more or less common to the different fits and the study them and their attributes, mock up a fit on EFT to see how it accommodates to my character skill level, investigate how much said modules cost and what is the availability in my current station and so on and on and on...

So, if anyone else thinks like the guy above, please keep it to yourselves. I don't think it's pointless to “just post fits”

Alright alright alright ladies, you're both the prettiest. Now, I'm going to suggest how to fit it, Alindak you should probably flesh it out, and then people can criticize it.

[Highs]
Range you'll want light missiles
A neut if you can for a chance in hell of breaking tackle if you get caught in lowsec

[Mediums]
MWD for more speed, or AB for a smaller sig
Tank (Medium shield booster + cap modules or extenders for buffer/passive)
You'll want some faction specific hardeners
Possibly a tackle module or application module

[Lows]
DCU II
BCUs
Nanofiber or fitting module if running out of space

[Rigs]
Warhead calefaction catalyst if you can
Resist rigs or buffer if you're using MSEs.


Now make a fit with these in mind, and discuss it.

I don't really like this fit, but it should work out. You're really only looking up to 4/10s and there you really want to focus on range tanking and sniping. This will do the trick. So what's wrong with it?

For one, no dual prop. I'd prefer to have that and keep the option of running an AB to keep sig down while keeping the MWD for gates and positioning.

Next, it relies on cap charges. ASBs are excellent at keeping you alive but not so hot at keeping plenty of cargo space available for loot. Not my favorite thing for a wandering low sec hunter fit.

You also can't squeeze on missile rigs, but the guidance computer will help to make up for that.

So there's your cheap fit.

Next, the expensive one:

So moving away from ASBs immediately hurts your cap. While you don't really need to perma the tank and prop, you DO want to be able to run for some time just in case you **** up. The solution to that turns out to be a deadspace mod -- 80mil in the booster alone. The deadspace resistance amps also save you on cap and aren't that expensive. The EM runs under 20 mil and the other flavors should all be under 2 mil. So all in the tank runs you 100mil.

So what does this setup get you for that investment? Most importantly, a T2 bay loading accelerator. There is simply no better way to jack up DPS on a missile ship than a BLA 2. You do lose the missile guidance computer and thus lose some range, but you should be pumping out enough damage from faction missiles to make up for the loss.

Finally: dual prop. As already mentioned, this is good.

Options on this fit include playing around with meta prop mods to get slightly better fitting or better cap life. You could also go all in on faction damage mods but... wait on that. It's a big investment for someone not used to low. Oh, you could also swap out the cap recharger for something more useful; PWNAGE fits. Guidance computers, unfortunately, don't.

And then if you wanted to be dumb and spend way too much you could do this:

This happens a lot both online & offline so I've devised a standard way of dealing with it.

When someone says "but that's not what I asked", then just say "yeah but that's my answer" and let them stew over it.

Having said that, it's ok to lose ships. Especially if you can afford it and enjoy the process. I don't believe in 'you have to start cheap' or 'learn with limited resources/investment first' or 'minimise your loss' kinda thing. But the reason why people recommend you try to learn more about ship fits before you commit to loss (which you certainly will be when you fly out to low sec now) is so you can get best experience out of it before your inevitable loss.
