So, even the forums can be dangerous to new players.

And I know the thread is unlikely to actually help anyone for the reasons Solceist pointed out, but I still like to point things out when I see them. The social engineering aspect is pretty unique to EVE and a lot of players coming from other games probably don't realize how impactfull the forums can be on your gameplay in EVE.

The forum has always been part of the EVE metagame, since the beginning.
It's a wonderful filter for the ignoramus types.

Lots of places on the Internet are "dangerous." Forums, chat rooms, social nets-- all offer a megaphone for various kinds of idiocy, to be chiseled in digital stone forever. The sharks will sit back and let you do it too. Always assume the waters are infested, and don't be the chum.

Yeah this.
You summed it up better than I did.

The premis of this thread is kind of silly. Most EVE players (including corp recruiters) don't even know this forum exists, and most that do ignore it. Hell, I've watched FAMOUS Reddit/something awful/4chan/whatever craplords join various EVE corps at will.

If anything, posting stupid stuff might be a leg up into some corps.

I always thought this was their test for new applicants.

If anything, reading these forums have made me a lot more cautious of prospective corporations, rather than the other way around.

Shrug, while there are corps that would reject your application, there are plenty of other corps that wouldn't. If other players like you, they will forgive past stupidities, especially if you show you got your act together.

If it's not on the first page, I don't read it. If it's 2012, it's got too much dust on it to read.
If a CEO is thumbing through forum posts to make a recruitment decision, I'll save him some time.
I wouldn't be in a corp with a CEO that's so either tiny-minded, or petty.

Very true, very true. It's like that old Japanese saying, "The nail that stands up is hammered down."

A few thoughts

-Eve is supposed to be harsh for new (and old) players, so why not the forums as well

-Eve employment history can be compared to the real life history as well I guess. Can't really see the problem in this one though, because if someone doesn't like the actions you've done in the past, I say **** 'em. Too many people are constantly obsessed about what the others might think of them, letting this limit their actions

-Had a great time reading through that thread again (had no recollection whatsoever of writing a reply there as well back in 2012), thank you for letting me relive those moments Lol

No problem :)
I'm not saying it's bad, just commenting on it as I hadn't really thought about it until I read that thread.

Just imagine someone nuts enough openly declares GD as pvp zone ...
... with a sticky at the top, mqkingnsure everyone knows at first look!

It would be almost like it is, but much better!

And instead of needing to protect anyone ...
... a well thought out initial post would solve almost all problems before they even come up!

What always bothers me about CCPs rules regarding the web ...
... is that they don't stay true to their sandbox at least at the one place that matters!

The one place the worst of the worst gather up ...
... not only here, but in many other games as well!

Us here are actually pretty moderate... *cough*

Simple questions like 'do you still feel the same ways as when you posted 'x'?" Move on from there.

Yes our digital fingerprints smear. Anyone on the net should be aware of that. Not just in the forums.

In my experience, any corp or alliance that actually checks the posting history or killboards of their applicants, soon ends up being terrorised off the face of new eden. No place for bogans here, so be aware of that.

The tricky thing with eve is that so many things that happens/gets said out of the game can be used for/against you in game. A screen shot containing some information you didn't filter out, a casual mention of your weekend activity that gives out an intel, boasting about a nice coup in market that gives hints to competitors, etc, etc. People will go extraordinary lengths to gain that advantage, and will use all/any tools they can to beat you.

People are still 'playing' EvE even when they don't have clients open, setting up operations, discussing strategies, fleet comps, negotiating deals. Making excel sheets while at work, receiving pings on the way back home, staying on voice comm while playing other games, etc, etc.

So basically, people just have to take it serious the old saying "Trust no one", and apply it both in/out of the game. If you don't trust Jita local, you shouldn't trust forums either. :p

We don't need victims who weaken our virtual genepool.

Anyone who ignores quality over quantity has no ground to speak about new players and how we need more of them.

Then why are you commenting here?
