I came back to the game a little over a month ago because I had two friends that had just started playing again. Since I've been back I haven't done much other than sit in a station. trading is fun and I don't lose many ships doing it. But in the little over a month that I've been playing my friend has lost two mackinaws in high sec and almost quit. I didn't really know what to tell him about his ships other than to say be careful where you mine and watch local.
He decided he wanted to be a hauler. He trained the skills and last week I gave him the money to buy him a Charon. Stay in high sec and have fun. (my original plan was to be a freighter pilot myself but to many jumps) I've flown around a bit and bought things for him to haul. He makes money to pay me back I get stuff cheaper than I would in jita.
Well a few minutes ago I get a phone call. My friend is in asking for 250 mil because some guy is going to blow up his ship. I send it to him cause I'm a nice guy (and he might have my stuff in that ship). He gives the guy the money and the guy ask for 150 more well he has that much (so why didn't he just ask for 100 mil) and gives to him.
Another guy ask if he needs help and my friend says yes. The guy challenges him to a duel and my friend excepts. (REALLY!!) He gets his week old Charon with 54 blocks of ice (his) in the cargo hold blown up in 0.6 space.
I say he's an idiot but I don't know exactly what to tell him other than never except a duel when you're being ganked while flying a Charon. He was in 0.6 space 75 km from the gate he just came through and the guy was bumping him so he couldn't warp. I would have just done nothing sit there until the server reset. If they attack him concord is right there but the idiot accepts a duel.
Should I just suggest that he tries a WOW free trial or what?

Can I suggest before you start laughing at others ineptitude in a PC game..... you learn how to use the return/enter key.

Some space between paragraphs please.

Basic PC use 101.

Who ever actually pays ransoms? It is guaranteed they will blow you up regardless.

I must say if this story is actually genuine its surprising someone could play long enough to acquire freighter skills and not understand how EVE actually works.

Wait wait, did I happen to be on this Charon KM? Cos I did run into a suspect timered charon in HS a couple weeks ago that I tagged onto. Fun times :)

Besides taking in what people say above, use the Anti-ganking channel in game, if you're in the main pipes you may get help or tips on how to get out of this type of situation, if it was a large code op, they can take down any ship they please, they have scouts, scanners, bumper, all working together to kill their target, Anti-ganker fleets do what we can but we can't be in all places

So the Anti-ganking channel may save your ass, keep it open and use the information contained within, just don't give up on it, you don't always get an answer but the information you provide may save the next ship from the same fate

Information is key, keep it flowing and never fly a ship though a gank area on auto pilot, we can't help if you're afkRoll

A soft answer turneth away wrath. Once wrath is looking the other way, shoot it in the head A painting of me

My suggestion would be to downgrade your friend to a Tayra or Badger until he's had some more time to really learn the ropes of hauling. Once he's got the nuances down then maybe upgrade to a Bustard or Crane and work from there.

I know the freighter is appealing in many ways, but it's a pretty expensive ship and a common target for ne'er do wells who covet the shiny things inside. To pilot one effectively you need more than just skillbooks and ISK; you need to KNOW your route inside and out, who's who on team bad guy, and you also need a support crew to help assure that your freight will arrive safely. That last bit is often overlooked. Scouts, logistic support and webbers can all improve your survival chances.
Going it solo is pretty much asking to be interfered with.

Dont send him elsewhere, just sit him down and help him work out a plan for recovery. Do your homework and learn from the loss.

Come hell or high water, this sick world will know I was here.

Wrong. Some of us still honour ISK and song (song preferred, they even make ISK out of it) ransoms.

Quoted from Doc Fury: "Concerned citizens: Doc seldom plays EVE on the weekends during spring and summer, so you will always be on your own for a couple days a week. Doc spends that time collecting kittens for the on-going sacrifices, engaging in reckless outdoor activities, and speaking in the 3rd person."

The way that I'm reading the story, his "idiot" friend got a free freighter, eventually got bored from hauling, then got 250m extra from this guy, then got the insurance payout on his freighter.

Sounds like you got scammed, OP.

This guy got a free freighter, supposedly gets bumped around 80km off a gate, agree's to pay a ransom, then accepts a duel request from a passing stranger and gets blown up.

I smell a rat. And insurance fraud.

BTW, the best way to avoid this is by paying attention to DOTLAN (or even the ingame map), having a team of in-corp scouts and webbers (you need friendly fire on for this to work tho) , and hanging out in the Minerbumping channel doesn't hurt, either.

I would advise staying away from the so-called 'Anti-Ganker' channel , as it is full of some of the most racist bigots and scum in EVE.

And that's saying ALOT.

Everything in EVE is a trap.

And if it isn't, it's your job to make it a trap...:)

350 mil, after the extra added ransom. However, I'm inclined to believe the guy... provided his friend was not in reality him... stranger **** has happened. My take is the guy is just being way too nice to his buddy to try and keep him involved in the game. I can understand this, hell I've paid a friend's subscription for three months just to get him to give it another chance myself. It didn't take, but that's a different story. His carebear powah was too stronk, and he lost interest before doing anything interesting.

He just needs to realign his buddy's axii and get him aligned to what the heck really goes on when you fly silly.

Come hell or high water, this sick world will know I was here.

So, you cared so little about your friend so you let him to join the most PITA AND unprofittable high risk no reward activity you might run into, you ignored the point when he got the most useless freighter of the four available, did nothing to make him learn the ropes of said activity, then gave him "fortune" load of ISKs for questionable stuff.
Then you call your friend an idiot. I say great job!

To be fair, OP has indicated that he himself may also be an idiot as well for exactly said reasons. (except the caldari hate... who doesn't like tentacles?)
That bit is part of why I'm inclined to believe this is legit... most trolls wouldn't be willing to admit they were possibly at fault for a portion of the dreck they're involved in. I think the point here is that said friend is an idiot of a much grander scale, and is in dire need of education in the department of 'how this crap works'

It's possible that through some rehabilitation he could come to be a valuable commodity... err member of society.

Come hell or high water, this sick world will know I was here.

If we look at zkillboard, specifically the CONCORD kill pages, I think the trend is pretty obvious. Most ganking on miners and haulers happens in and around Jita.

Therefore, the solution is easy, stay away from Jita!

It sounds plausible enough tonight, but wait until tomorrow. Wait for the common sense of the morning.
