(let's not try and turn this into a democrat vs. republican thing plz).

http://news.yahoo.com/iran-sentences-iranian-u-man-death-spying-072628552.html

So looking at this seriously, the Iranian government is pretty much willing to starve all of it's people to death just for the sake of one thing. No, it's not the attainment of nuclear power, though you'd be close. It's actually the ability to produce their own nuclear fuel.

Why is this a problem? Because it allows them to build nuclear weapons. This is the unfortunate reality of this technology that it can be used for one or the other. This is bad. There has even been offers to sell them the nuclear fuel rods for a power reactor instead of them being able to produce it themselves, and they didn't accept this. In light of this, it's kind of hard not to see what they're really after.

But really, why would the Iranian government be willing to make it's people endure such terrible sanctions? And threatening to close off the world oil supply simply because they want such terrible weapons? Myself, I can't fathom this.

They did remember awhile ago they had a small revolt over elections, gas prices and unemployment. The thing is the Iranian gov't is really good at suppressing protest, and political organization. Last I checked they wanted to make the whole of Iran a closed network as well. (No outside internet.) Things are different when they not only threaten to put you in jail, but also your entire family.

Also a fair amount of their population are conservative Islamist, and another portion isn't well educated which means they believe the gov't. The more moderate parts of the population also desire nuclear energy. (And who could blame them and not label us as hypocrites for telling no they shouldn't.)

Furthermore Iran is really good at trolling the west... So take that into consideration.

Various reasons:
* National Pride.

* Become a regional super-power (again.) Power and influence over the region.

* History. Persia was once a great empire with a proud history.

* Having a sure fire way of getting out from under the thumb of Western influence. Remember, the United States overthrew the democratically elected government of Iran, replaced it with a dictator (the Shah) and then acted all surprised when the Shah was overthrown in a popular revolution. Iran with nuclear weapons (and the missiles to deliver them) would force the rest of the world to treat Iran with "respect."

* It's cheaper to develop nuclear power from scratch than it is to build more refineries so that Iran can actually use the oil it produces.

Ok, maybe the last one isn't true.

The real question is, why is Iran being such a ****? If they stopped with the "Israel must cease to exist" and the "the West is the Great Satan" comments, it would be publicly and diplomatically more difficult to justify confronting Iran over its nuclear weapons program.

Also, as North Korea has shown, governments are more than willing to deprive their people to meet various ends.

This thread will end well.

I predict polite discussion without political fighting, chest beating, racism, circular religious / cultural debates arguments of morality and blind hatred of nationalities.

Their is no way this could go downhill fast.

No, it is just fear mongering. Iranians are not stupid, they want nukes for the same reason USA has nukes, Pakistan has nukes, India has nukes, France has nukes, UK has nukes, China has nukes. And all others wiht nukes. To assure their own safty and not be attcked by a war mongering nation like Israel or USA.

Seems reasonalbe to me.

However I do not agree or like the current rule in Iran, I think religion should never have anything to do with anything, since it is all dangerous make belive.

But Iran might not have been so bad if not for USA/UK sponsored coup in the 50's http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1953_Iranian_coup_d%27%C3%A9tat

They nationalized their oil industry in 1951, the coup happens in 1953. Go figure.

Just to stir the pot a bit, besides the well known fact the Mossad discovered some of the uranium used by Iran was VENEZUELAN ... Also for the LULZ the Venezuelan Envoy in Miami was expelled from the USA for well, having ties with Iran.

Word in the street in Miami and local venezuelan expat groups is USA found out the guys in Miami were behind some of the defacements or hackings of some US govt sites.

Anyway, please, as a venezuelan expat practically living in exile in panama, let me remind you the blasphemy this was and keeps being, our military ties with Iran.

A real Venezuelan, the ones with enough understanding of the realities of the world would be against the madness you promptly point out.

Everytime someone mentions Iran, you can see Chavez behind.

There's lots and lots of info on the net, by several key members of the international community exposing the darker ties of the Venezuela-Iran bond.

So please, remember who supplied uranium to Iran, who knows, the next nuke might have some of the soil from my homeland enveloped in an Iranian shell ... meh

Edit: Also I still don't know why no one has mentioned that some of the nukes/fuel will eventually go to Venezuela (Cuban Missile Crisis T2?) and that the only nuclear reactor our country had (for scientific purposes, a very small one) was taken away from the scientific community and militarized. ugh.
