Stole from can, no suspect flag?

I was in a newbie system just now helping a friend and I noticed a barge mining into a can nearby. The can was a yellow box with a slash through it. So, I ambled over there, opened the can, and took as much veldspar as I could out of the can. When I did this I got no suspect flag and the can turned blue and said "Abandoned". Note that I have green safe on.

What was happening there?

you looted a blue can, he abandoned the loot so you would go away.

he must have done it just as you opened it and you lagged.

tl:dr he outsmarted you.

Why would he abandon his can?

Because he's a coward and an ******* mining in a rookie system.

If he thought you were trying to bait him into opening fire when you go Suspect. If he abandons his can, it sends a clear message he ain't going to play.

ETA: redock, bring out something big, and clean the can out. Free cash. :-)

Unless, of course, the miner in question was indeed a rookie.

If he's abandoning wrecks to avoid people going suspect by looting them he is almost certainly not a rookie.

What she said.

Everything in EVE is a trap.

And if it isn't, it's your job to make it a trap...:)

IIRC can-flipping is a no-no in newbie systems.

Can flipping literally hasn't been a thing that exists for several years.

It's true. Since crime watch most of the elite can flippers of old walked away from it. Something about being able to be shot by folks that might have guns and ammunition for 15 min or until you could get to a station was just unBEARable to most of them. When CCP added risk to the can flippers profession - it mostly went away. Some called it nerfing HS by adding risk to can flipping. It was a confusing time.

I miss can-flipping. Cry

No, wait... Me? I don't miss can-flipping. A, uh, friend of mine, he does. Yes, a friend, that's it.

Since crime watch, can flipping give one not only the suspect flag.
Additional the victim can take back his property from the can of the suspect into a own can
without receiving suspect flag!
And there doesn't matter if in the can is only victims stuff or additional stuff from the suspect.
So can flipping is completely senseless these days.
