Can someone explain to me please how corporation shares work?

If I were to receive, for instance, 500 shares out of 1000 of one corporation, what would that mean for me? Would I receive money from the corporation - if so, what is that amount based on? What else do I receive as a shareholder?

Thanks.

Hello,

You might find some useful information on corporation shares and dividends in this page on EVElopedia.

Hope that helps. Smile

I had a look there, but it wasn't as in-depth as I was expecting.

I thought there were people who were receiving 30mil+ per day having shares in corporations (how does that work anyway?) - I thought it was more than just voting rights?

Corps can pay out dividends just like IRL.

That said, if you own 1 of 100 shares you own 1%

Now if the corp pays a dividend of 100mil ISK you would recieve 1& or 1 mil isk.

The only other use is for voting or running for CEO. I think you have to have 5% to run, but don't quote me on that.

There are player-run corporations that operate solely as investment vehicles -- people give their money to the corporation, which uses this capital to run some kind of a profitable activity and pays a part of that profit to shareholders as dividends. For the most part these ventures are announced and discussed (often at length) in the Market Discussions forum section.

It would be a good moment to point out that all such enterprises are completely player-run, and that we do not interfere with them as far as potential scams are concerned; caveat emptor.

you receive money based on the amount of shares you own only when the corp ceo issues dividends.

the problem with the shares is, once you get a share, noone can force you to give it up. because of this, most corps never bother issuing shares and handle any payments informally (thru direct money transfer)

If people are receiving money for holding shares, that's called a dividend. In EVE dividends are paid by the CEO deciding to manually issue dividends. It is only a regular disbursement in as much as the CEO chooses to be punctual and regular about it.

Since there is no formalized way of trading shares in EVE (IE you can't just issue a public contract for shares for some reason, likely an oversight) they're basically relegated to simply being a source of voting rights and being paid dividends whenever the CEO feels like dispensing them, which is often never.

As far as actually trading shares for profit or dividends, as said above it's done completely outside of the established market or contracts infrastructure and as such it's all pretty much a sandbox of hazards and awkwardness.

Some corporations will pay out dividends to people that invest in them.
They are payed out depending on the percentage of shares you hold.

Other corporations use it as a way to pay its members or clear out extra ISK from the corporations accounts.
A lot easier to drop a billion iSK to the share holders then to go through and divide the amount with the number of people you want to share it with and then pay everyone individually.
Good way also to tag Mains from alts as well :)

I don't understand this dividends idea - don't even know what they are!

Couldn't the CEO just refuse to issue them?
