Kill Rights - Rare

Greets!

Read this in the context of high or low sec, please.

So... having put myself in harms way (a lot) and being destroyed (a lot) you'd think I'd end up with kill rights at least once in a while, but I don't.

I had supposed that when a gang fires the first shot, or scrams or webs first, and I'm obliterated, that would mean I get a kill right. Not so.

What is going on? I've attempted to digest both the Eve wiki and Eve uni articles, but cannot find anything that grants the aggressor immunity from having kill rights placed against them.

If you've an explanation, I'd love to hear it.

Thanks!

Did you shoot at the people who killed you?
Were you "suspect status?" (see: you shot someone who was neutral and had a yellow timer)
Were you are war with the people who killed you?

All of the above means you won't get kill rights against your attackers.

In order to get a kill right...
- you have to be killed without firing a shot (or aggressing in any way)
- you have no timers except the "limited engagement" one (see: only the blue/teal timer)
- you are not at war with the people who killed you

Kill rights are only useful when the person in question is...
- in high-sec
- does not have a security status of -5.0 or lower (below that and anyone can engage them anyways).

If the people you want to kill are in low-sec, null-sec, or wormhole space... well... it hardly matters as you can basically shoot them anyways.

Ah-ha.

Thanks, ShahFluffers for the detailed explanation!

Yes, of course I returned fire. So... that is it.

You don't actually have to be killed - just illegally aggressed.

In Hisec, you will get a kill right if your ship/pod is illegally attacked (ie; you aren't a suspect/criminal, you don't have a limited engagement with the other pilot or you are not at war).

In Lowsec, you will get a kill right if your pod is illegally attacked (ie; you aren't a suspect, you don't have a limited engagement with the other pilot or you are not at war). You do not get killrights for shooting ships in lowsec.

Once you are attacked you are allowed to shoot back and that will have no effect on wether any kill rights are granted.

Wrong. As ShahFluffers has said above, if you shoot back you will not get kill rights.

In Hi-sec if they "illegally" aggressed you, and you shot back, you do still get kill rights

Nope.

Kill rights are front loaded onto the illegal aggresion. It has been that way since the changes to crimewatch a few years ago.

Kill Rights will now be created at the same time a Criminal flag is put on a player, but only for attacking in hi sec or podding in low sec. RRing a Criminal will not create a kill right (but still puts a Criminal flag on the repper).

Kill rights are granted at the moment of illegal aggression and are NOT consumed until specifically activated by the owner of the rights. You can, in fact, destroy the offender yourself and then at a later date activate the rights and do it again. Biggest thing to remember is you have to ACTIVATE your rights, this is not automatic!

In Hi sec you will never get killrights on someone if...

You are suspect (yellow) or criminal (red).
You are at war with the aggressor.
You accepted a duel with the aggressor.
You attacked a legal target (yellow, red) and they shoot back at you.
