Intimidated to Role Play

The thing about role play is you have to enjoy the reaction you get out of others.

Looking to talk on VOIP with other EVE players? Are you new and need help with EVE (welfare) or looking for advice? Looking for adversarial debate with angry people?

I'm wondering if roleplay in EvE is restricted to be compatible with in-game lore ... or does it just mean, I'm talking/posting like I'm ignoring that New Eden is a fictional universe? So meta gaming is incompatible with roleplay then?

It's become something that people spend more time making snide remarks about and putting people down for than engaging with. But when I started a lot of high profile figures who were quite serious in other areas (Market Discussions) or had a high profile (GHSC) popped into IGS frequently in character. Very early portions of CAOD nullsec stuff looked semi RP - especially Molle - and C&P still has a huge RP vibe. To a degree Mittens still engages in it, but I don't think the majority of new players can detect those elements/separate them from the RL persona.

Keep an eye on the lore stuff CCP are coming up with. As far as I know, Falcon was an RPer ingame and the community team are involved in the lore 'events'. It'd be nice if they could write something up explaining why they've chosen to start promoting this element again and draw attention to it's heritage ingame. It is quite engaging once you start rummaging about and I'd like to hear from CCP why they're focusing upon it and what it'll bring.

To answer your question, in some ways it's incompatible with the current state of the meta - unless you can handle being mocked. Some don't give a damn though, and their RP responses are hilarious.

Troubles getting into RP? Alcohol or any other medication that dulls activity in the neo-cortex, that part of the brain that regulates impulses and allows you to be sensible and dignified. Problem solved.
My RP starts and ends with rolling up on a jetcan in Empire space in an industrial, aligning, stealing and docking. It's backstory is that my father was hideously injured in a jetcan accident and i work to discourage the practice. Some people are so cool i give the ore back.
There's a segment of the playerbase that are locked into, or have just discovered, the phase in life where you realise and validate yourself by messing with others. They generally congeal in hisec and nibble on non-combat players and ships. Not to be confused with those who kill for profit, these guys are after tears.
None of them have ever really put much effort into the ultimate source of blood-pressure wrecking exasperation: Hard. Core. Roleplaying.
By speaking as if the stick up your ass has a stick up it's ass, by being lugubrious in an attempt to sound weighty, by adhering to messily written lore in a simplistic way and by breaking the RP atmosphere by speaking (OOC) out of character every few minutes, your Hardcore RP critter is actually more annoying than any amount of barge, freighter or blingfit mission running BS losses.
CODE have toyed with the edges of it, but really only enough to look like sexually confused individuals fallen into the sort of cult that forms around a lack of ideas.
Lotsa luck!

Please ignore those who bash rpers. They are a waste of time.

Definitely joined the Out of Character channel ingame. Backstage is a great resource for many things also. Here is a link to their character sheet section. Read through a bunch of other peoples profiles if you are having trouble with yours.

My, I didn't know about that backstage forum, and lore/roleplay in tweetfleet really left a bitter taste in my mouth. Will need to check it out as well.

Honestly all these OOG resources are nice to have there, but you don't need 'em.

All you need is your character/s and other people's characters, if you're seeking RP. Though if you're looking to socialise in an out of character context with other RPers then sure, those places can be great.

I've RPed heavily in EVE for over five years now, and still do ingame almost daily. I've never registered on Backstage (or any of the equivalent communities) and I don't use Tweetfleet Slack. I dislike both for personal reasons, though many others enjoy these OOG communities so I always recommend people check them out anyway.

Lurking the ingame RP channels, maybe posting there occasionally, and/or lurking the IGS section on the forum is enough to see who's out there, allowing you to poke the characters that interest you and get some RP going. There's no shortage of RP opportunities around EVE, you just gotta have the stomach to sit down and shoot off an in-character message or convo to someone.

Like any content in EVE, you gotta find or create your own most of the time.

I actually go for the cardboard people in my apartment, so passersby think I have friends.

There just isn't anything that can be said!

There are a few In game Channels you will want to look into, those being:

OOC, Or "Out of Character" That Is fairly active.

The Summit, The In game version of The IGS.

http://backstage.eve-inspiracy.com/ Has a large following of EVE Roleplayers, and is still fairly active as well.

Asking around will bring up loads of active channels with various purposes.

Just to add to your post a little, Mista Buldath! Smile

The Summit
OOC

'The Summit' is a player-owned/moderated in-character RP channel. It's sister channel is 'OOC', where you can chat out of character with other roleplayers.

The Intergalactic Summit
Out Of Character

'The intergalactic Summit' is CCP owned/moderated (well tbh not really moderated actively). It's an in-character RP channel, and 'Out Of Character' is it's sister channel for out of character chat with other RPers. These channels are also occasionally used during live events by Dev-controlled actors.

Traditionally The Summit has been the more active channel, though in recent times The Intergalactic Summit has kinda become the most used one (some people blame over-moderation in the player run channel).

Like ISD Buldath said, there's also literally hundreds of other smaller player run RP channels.

One thing to remember is we are all role playing every time we log in. Have you ever said something like "I'm at the stargate"? Well, you were not at the stargate. You were sitting in a chair at home playing a computer game. The mere use of terms like "I'm at the stargate" or "I am undocking" means you are a role player.

Its actually quite natural. We all think about what we are doing in-game as though we are actually there, doing it. So the real thing you need to do on an RP channel is NOT refer to any real world actions or items. Beyond that, be yourself and have fun!
