Intimidated to Role Play

Greetings,

I've often thought about jumping in on the Intergalactic Summit and role play channels in game. Every time I think I am ready to post or start chatting I stop. Just a few minutes ago I was reading through the Summit and I really have no idea where to begin or what to post about.

Does anyone have role play resource where I can read and learn how to do it? I am a bit afraid to jump in because I might make a bigger fool of myself than I ever want.

First of all, the best ice breaker is to discuss how the Minmatar scum are ungrateful towards the Amarr. I know that's something we can all agreed upon.

The Minmatar are like children and the Amarr are like benevolent adults that just want the best for all of God's children. The Amarr gave the Minmatar a purpose and a life beyond that of fighting among their pathetic tribes and how do the Minmatar repay the Amarr for this generosity? Armed rebellion...that's not right...no matter how you look at it.

It sounds plausible enough tonight, but wait until tomorrow. Wait for the common sense of the morning.

Role play resource? The best role play resource is your imagination!

.. or cardboard weapons... or in certain roleplay instances a wide variety of costumes in the bedroom closet.

I go to work everyday and roleplay a decent human being. Its damn hard work to keep it up.

Since the cessation of their usefulness is imminent, may I appropriate your belongings?

I'd suggest that the first place to start would be to build up your character. Before you can roleplay you need to build the role to play, so work out who your character is and what drives her, write her bio, decide on her character traits, that kind of thing. Then it's a case of working to stick within the lore of the game and the traits of the character you've built.

Don't worry so much about making a fool of yourself, it's a video game on the internet. I don't even roleplay and I make a fool of myself daily. No biggie.

Just create a character to RP whose back story explains why you are totally ignorant of the goings-on amongst the other RPers.

From backwater world. Think politics is a waste of time. Have been adrift between the stars for decades. Rich kid with sense of entitlement who became a capsules out of boredom. Whatever.

So long as you aren't deliberately ignorant to spoil the fun for everyone else, it'll be fine.

Eve's roleplay is unique because it is an evolution of earth but at the same time, still very much a current and modern humanitarian story. There are many different point of views of the story line.

Best way to roleplay eve? Start with your character's origins, so the Amarr of your bloodline. From there, you can go whatever way you want. Eve faction alliances are not locked in so there is no reason why you cannot say be a ruthless business person from Tash working with caldari, an advocate for minmatar or just a hardliner Amarr loyalist. Could even have grown up in Gallente and not had religion and been what amarrians call a heathen?

How extreme do you wish to go? I consider myself a roleplayer and it does not require being heavily outspoken with fiction in the summit. It can be as simple as a stand vs current events such as the drifters and what ships you fly.

To quote Lfod Shi

The ratting itself is PvE. Getting away with it is PvP.

Ooh, I know! You've recently suffered a head injury and been befriended by a miniature giant space hamster! Who needs knowledge of current affairs with that kind of a back story?!

Some of the better RPing resources in the game ATM

EDIT: and I don't mean this in a grr CODE way. I don't spend time in HS, but their RPing has brought a lot of content to the game. They are good examples of how to RP well.

I cant believe I'm actually agreeing with Lucas on something but this is good advice. If you're getting in to RP on an established character you can also use elements of your own play history as part of your RP.

As an example of the above i spent about the first 18 months or so of my eve career as a mission runner for caldari navy before our corp decided to move to lowsec and try out some pvp and piracy. So if I was making a RP history for Darek now part of it would be showing he started out as an idealistic patriot happy to work for the State but gradually became disillusioned and bitter due to the endless parade of death and destruction with no forseeable outcome beyond more of the same. The feelings spread through his corp and eventually they all decided to just stick two fingers up to the State and go do their own thing somewhere outside the empires.

And yes, CODE is an excellent example of taking a simple core principle and basing your RP around it.

Thanks so much!

I will get started on character development now. Can I do that on the Evelopedia or should I make a private document? I'm pretty excited! :)

You might also want to check out the Backstage RP forums where many Eve RPers hang out, share ideas, post comments, etc. You'll also get far better advice and answers to your questions than the trollish Eve GD forums.

There's channels where you don't roleplay, filled with roleplayers, called "Out of character" ...
... where lots of nice people hang out throughout the day, chatting. :)

There used to be activity there right now.

I'm wondering if roleplay in EvE is restricted to be compatible with in-game lore ... or does it just mean, I'm talking/posting like I'm ignoring that New Eden is a fictional universe? So meta gaming is incompatible with roleplay then?

Pretty much this. Smile

Get to know some of the other RPers a little. People there will also be happy to give advice and feedback.

It's not necessary though. Some people shield themselves from any out of character. It's all about immersion afterall. So if you're feeling confident just jump on in.

The Summit(s) are just chat channels; general chatter like you might do anywhere, but for our characters themselves and not us. So as the other folks said, you need to have some idea of who your character is, their personality and what drives them. Personally I find you can try to give your character a backstory and framework but you truly don't learn who they are until they start interacting with others, often taking a life of their own. =) Once you're ready for that just jump in and start chatting!

Keep in mind that in an RP-contexf the Summit(s) aren't physical locations. They're sorta network hubs where characters connect remotely, appearing in video or holo form, or sometimes even just text.

So just lurk and watch how others conduct themselves. Or even shoot me a message if you'd like to practice without feeling pressured. I'm sure Kali would enjoy a conversation over holo-comms sometime and you might pick up a few tips and ideas for your own RP style along the way.

As for publishing your character's backstory of personal details it's really personal choice. You can use your ingame bio, the eve wiki, your own website, along with numerous out of game communities such as backstage or oureve.com.

Welcome and have fun! Big smile
