Hi

I've done the starter missions and can't think that I've been shown how to do what I'm about to ask.

If I wish to track other peoples missions so I can go in afterwards and salvage wrecks, how can I scan for this? I'm sure I've read responses where people have suggested this.

So much to take on board with this game and I seem to be forgetting more than I can learn

An expanded probe launcher and combat probes, with their requisite skills of course.
I highly recommend you get familiar with their use as it's a valuable skill to have for PvP.

You can't scan the site down unless they are actually in the site or have left something like drones or a mobile depo there
(neither npc's nor their wrecks show)

Ninja salvaging is ok isk , better in systems where established players run them though.
Best isk actually comes from recovering drones, t2 ones will be your bread and butter, faction and geckos being veritable gold mines for you this early.

This also leads into bear flipping which is good fun if you're the patient sort.

They normally won't unless you go suspect for theft and as you grow in skills and confidence you'll soon learn to use that to your advantage and make it all a lot more profitable ;)

All good information so far I just want to clarify a situation that has gotten several new players I know in trouble of sorts and you mention it here. Every wreck in space is fair game for anyone to salvage and yes that means the yellow ones. If they shoot you for it they will get the visit from Concord unless you have a criminal or suspect flag. Please note I said "salvage" as in to use your salvage beam, if you try to tractor beam the wreck to you or you fly to the wreck and open it and remove the contents (looting) then you have just committed a criminal act by stealing from that person giving them the right to shoot you which may or may not be fun depending on why you are there.

A few other tips.
Stay away from the structures in the mission pockets if the mission runner is there. Depending on what ship you are flying, how it is fit and the size of the structure it is possible for the mission runner to kill you by blowing up the structure you are sitting next to. The answer is no Concord will not come after them for it because they were not the cause of your death they structure explosion killed you, the fact that it was done intentionally is not of importance to Concord.

Watch the pockets when you warp into them. Many mission runners are wise to other players that do what you are doing and will leave a nasty surprise in the form of using the NPC in the pocket to protect their loot / salvage. Since they know what they left behind they can easily tank a salvage ship to handle it, you may not be so lucky.

Last one. Remember that the NPC may and usually do switch agro and one of the triggers is the newest ship in the pocket. So be prepared when you warp in to have to warp out just as quickly because the mission runner can tank the damage but you may not be able to.

Bear flipping (or more commonly suspect baiting ) is the practice of scanning down a mission running carebear* and stealing something to gain a suspect flag.

The aim is to get the mission runner to fire upon you ,creating a limited engagement whereupon most will re-ship into something tailored to kill that specific ship.

Our alliance training initially involved doing this with the restriction that we weren't allowed 're-ship and had to kill a battle ship with a frigate as a sort of right of passage thing.
It's interesting gameplay with a lot of nuanced particularities that I really enjoyed.

We are (or were anyway) known for felling outrageously expensive t2 battleships using only an ishkur.

From experience I can tell you about 1 in 8 mission runners will fire on you and about half of them wouldn't unless you're actively antagonistic with them (stealing stuff, chewing on their mobile tractor going "nom nom nom" in local chat, that sort of thing).

Most will either ignore you or immediately warp out.


* carebear is a term used to describe a particular type of pve player , worth noting that it's somewhat derogatory and sometimes synonymous with "coward" or more accurately "risk averse" but is often used in general terms to describe anyone not actively involved in PvP

If you do kill someone's mission ship, I highly recommend sending them a followup EVEmail insisting they pay a fine for unwarranted aggression.

People will sometimes wardec you over that (which then gets you another week of shooting them)

As with all blanket statements it would be bad for the OP to believe this. To flatly state that mission runners are a non-threat ignores the reality that there are players who use mission runners (usually an alt) as bait to lure you into a trap with the sole intent of killing you. My son and a group of his friends are particularly good at this and find it amusing to gank the gankers.
In the end I agree you should never be afraid of the mission runners, but to flatly dismiss the potential for them being a trap or the dangers the mission runner themselves could be would not be wise. In EvE as with combat everywhere in the real world it is the things you are not prepared for that can cause you the most trouble.

To the damage application thingy, best you go back and re-work your assumptions there. Applying your damage to a wide range hull classes is one of the major goals of a mission fit, and a good mission fit can and does apply it's considerable damage output very effectively to cruiser class and smaller hulls. A wise player has ways to counter this to the point where it becomes manageable but to flatly state that mission ships cannot apply damage is false and could mislead new players like the OP.

Some numbers from a cruise missile fit Golem just for giggles so the OP can look into this and determine the truth for themselves. To help with that and to further cause the OP headaches trying to come to grips with this game here is a link to an excellent source for information on how missiles apply damage and why the explosion radius and explosion velocity can be more important than the actual volley damage.

Max volley damage 7,999 hp
Exp radius 194 meters
Exp velocity 145 meters per second

With T2 precision missiles
Max volley damage 5750
Exp radius 101 meters
Exp velocity 202 meters per second

Considering drones you would have to be dealing with both of these options can apply damage quite affectively against small fast moving targets.
