Been lurking for a while and finally decided to try the free trial so here I am. Did a few of the beginning tutorials up until I reached the dock and then logged out to post this. I want to focus on exploration. I went Gallente to start with but i'm not sure what I need to focus on training? I just picked Hacking 2 during the tutorial since it was a short skill only taking 2 hours. Not sure if this was correct or not. I figure I will get some tutorial quests for this once I log back on a bit later?

The general consensus is that relic sites (Archaeology skill) are worth more, the mini game is exactly the same as the hacking mini game. I believe there have been some recent changes that have made the hacking skill more desirable, but I can't remember them off the top of my head.

For starters you're going to want Astrometrics, and the associated support skills: Astrometric Rangefinding, Astrometric Pinpointing and Astrometric Acquisition. These all improve your probing capabilities. Obviously add in Relic and Hacking if that's what you want to be doing. There's also combat exploration: scanning down combat sites. Basically like missions with a chance for a faction drop. For that, you'll need combat skills. Relic and Hacking are very accessible , and it doesn't take long to jump in and make some decent money, and above all, learn valuable skills (RL skills, not SP): how to travel safely, bookmarks, situational awareness, D-Scan, Probing etc...

That channel has a bunch of videos geared towards helping new players.

This is a general skill plan, it's a bit out of date since newly created characters start with around 400k SP instead of 55k, but it's worth taking a look.

Also, while there are 'quests' (they're called missions here), they're...not really the point of the game. Don't expect the game to tell you where to go, and what do next. Here is a cliched phrase you'll see a lot around here: "This isn't WoW in space". Thrown around alot, but accurate. This isn't like other MMOs you may have played; it's not a 'themepark' like Warcraft or other similar titles. It's up to you to make your own fun using the tools at your disposal, whether it's doing the PvE for it's own sake, gathering resources and building stuff, or burning the things other people build to the ground.

Grrr.

"Exploration" is a PVE activity similar to asking agents for missions, except you use various probes and scanners to find locations of interest, and then you go there and shoot pirates, mine asteroids, hack data sites, or scan (archeological) ruins of space stations.

So, basically, you need to be able to fly a PVE combat ship (frigate, cruiser, etc.), with adequate weaponry skills and support skills (shields, armor, energy, navigation, etc), and also you need the probing, scanning, hacking, and analyzer skills so you can use the scanner probes.

Be aware that EVE is a PVP game, and you will get attacked by players. You're focusing on a PVE activity, and that makes you even more of a valid target. On the plus side, though, you're already training for "combat", and it's only a few extra skills to be able to install the typical PVP modules, and PVP back.

Anyway, for specific skills plans, look at the various guides out there. The average player easily has 160+ different skills; this game is different from other games, where you get maybe 20 - 30 abilities; here each skill gives you 5% bonus to some very specific stat, and you accumulate all these tiny bonuses from 100 different places to get a huge boost in overall performance.

Hello and welcome to Eve.

I suggest first complete all 5 Career Agents and then run the Level 1 SoE Epic Arc. That will give you time to make some ISK while training up skills.

As for skills, train up the Core Fitting Skills asap since that will make fitting ships relatively easy. Afterwards I suggest splitting your skill training time up between ship support/combat skills and your choice of career skills which seems to be exploration.

Evelopedia, UniWiki, Google search, etc, are good resources for info.

Hope you have a long and rewarding career here.

Yay, exploration.

Join the exploration channel in game. Lots of cool people there and they will give you helpful info. Don't tell them where you are though or they might come find you.

A lot of the explorer crowd doesn't just pve, many pve and if they probe down a site and someone is already there, they blow them up, after quickly docking up and changing their fit to a pvp fit.

Use the gallante exploration frigate Imicus to start, once you get the skills down, train up for the Helios. You'll note that it has bonus that all are useful towards exploration.

Eve university as usual has an excellent guide to get you started.
http://wiki.eveuniversity.org/Odyssey_Exploration

Get the basic skills up in highsec, but exploration is usually best in low sec or null. High sec can be good, but the probability is a lot lower, and the competition is a lot fiercer.

Stay cheap until you know if you like it or not, if you end up liking it, then you'll be looking to eventually train up for the Sisters of Eve ships, or T3. The bonused ships are not necessary though, you can explore in any ship, but the bonuses help speed up the process by a lot, and when your skills are low, they mean the difference between being able to scan down a site or not.

My choice of pronouns is based on your avatar. Even if I know what is behind the avatar.

Try the channel eve-scout in game. lots of friendly explorers in there. One member The Master Blaster is trying to fund a plex through exploration in his first 30 days and has a blog. Might find some useful information in there: http://plexquest.com/

You make it sound so sexy, as if I have some sexy stalker type stalking my game and then showing up for surprise fun. Twisted

On a more serious note if you've been reading a lot about this game and hyper planning your trip through the game that is great. However experience is the only real teacher. Asking questions and reading up on stuff is very very helpful however I don't think that you should make up your mind on things until you've tried them.

So try various aspects of the game before you decide on one hyper-focused path.

Good advice above. Scanning skills are a must have for almost every EvE career, so even if you don't like exploring, those astrometics skill points are worth investing. Focus on one activity at a time, but be open to switch, try missioning, manufacturing, PI, trading and ... PvP. A fast track to get into PvP are the public fleets from the NPSI communities, like Spectre Fleet and Bombers Bar (join the channels with same name).
