Only real issue I have with the new map is that it's got this weird... fuzzy... look going on. The stars feel like they're slightly out of focus.

TIghten that up and I'll be happy.

Still _huge_ framerate drops when showing many locations/bookmarks on the map. I've about 800.

Quality of Life Improvement:

  • Average Pilots in Space in the Last 30 Minutes is harder to use because of point scaling and colour choices - point size could be transformed by an exponent or other option to make the distinction greater, range of brightnesses of colours used could be widened to make it easier for colourblind players to get the important information from the map.
  • I use the old map to plot courses through space that look for certain sized system populations - in the old map these scale from very small to very large with a great deal of granularity. In the new map the size of this marker for the smallest case of 1 person in space is the size of a marker that in the old map would be many tens of people. The colour graduation that goes with this is quite difficult for myself as a colourblind player to make out. In short I find it very difficult to discern very sparsely populated space from busier space in the new map. In addition seeing the plotted route with this overlay is hard when zoomed out.

My current activity scope: PVE player / hisec/lowsec ratting / exploration, mainly in nullsec / hauling

Missing Functionality

  • The biggest issue: lines transparency and star sizes. New map is hard to read lines-wise compared to the old map. https://imgur.com/a/Y9K5H Star dots mix up with the stars on the background image. It’s hard to read the constellation structure and estimate its density. And what does the dashed line mean anyway?

  • Security status: dim lines make it harder to read the region/constellation structure and determine your surroundings. https://imgur.com/a/0d4Ed I messed up with the scale on screenshot, but zooming in the new map doesn’t help much.

  • Selected system: when zoomed out, its structure mixes up with the stars/lines behind, see screenshot from previous point.

  • Names of systems surrounding selected system: they are absent and appear only in a very zoomed in state, and they are hard to read. Regarding the absence of names, see screenshot from two points above.

  • Statistics display: in addition to my original post (hi, vocal_tsunami is me). https://imgur.com/a/RPrJ3 Current implementation makes hard to differentiate systems between each other unless they have much higher value of the selected metric than the rest of the map. I think that all the metrics you provide have to be re-assessed in terms of how you intend to display them. E.g. jumps as heatmap work fine, because jumps happen all the time, but active pilots don’t need that range of color coding because it’s far less dynamic metric than jumps. And so on. Just go through every metric and approach them from users’ perspective, pretty please.

  • Highlighting gates that you’re going to jump through is missing from the new map. Locating the gate by the autopilot line sticking out of it is extremely confusing. https://imgur.com/a/7Ye1f

  • Solar system view: the background of the new map is too bright or too noisy to be able to navigate around the solar system. New scanning map is more suited for that, but new scanning map doesn’t have the autopilot gate highlighting too. https://imgur.com/a/kTFPL However, static images don’t represent how confusing it feels when you rotate the map around, zoom in/out etc.

  • “You are here” is barely recognizable and is confused between the highlighted (glowing) system, unlike the old map. Selected system is brigher than “you’re here” marker and distracts the eye too much. https://imgur.com/zm7dAyw

  • When I pick a metric to display, when I select the system (left-click on it) I cannot hover cursor over selected system and see its statistics. I can only see the statistics on hovering unselected systems. (Probably because the selected system switches to solar system view, but I don’t think that’s a valid reason to not display statistics for it.)

  • Highlighting waypoints.

Quality of Life Improvement Requests

  • Auto-plotting the way to the selected system becomes undistinguishable at a quick glance from the autopilot course, and the animation is irritating when it mixes up with other visuals. https://imgur.com/FsVFtuo Suggestion: make it thinner, but with same transparency! Use case: plotting your course becomes harder if you misclick someting along your route and will see another route line spawning to it.

  • Pirate and police ships destroyed in the last hour. You give that information in API, but you don’t show it on the map. It's inconsistent. Why? Use case: detecting region/system activity in the last hour, as on Dotlan/EveEye.

  • (probably will never happen but still) Show statistics for selected metric for a selected system in retrospective: add charts of metrics. Possible views: aggregated statistics of average metric value by hour of the day, day of the week for the last month; chronological chart of selected metric by hour for the last 24 hours, by day for the last week. Use case: determine how safe it is to be in this system right now, judging by historical data of metrics.

Very personal remarks

I’ve been using the new map for the last 6 weeks or so. I even started to get used to its quirks, when you rolled out yellow circles on it this week. It may sound dramatic, but you actually broke my routine interaction with the new map for no obvious reason. I can’t analyze and plan my routes from it now at all. As a user of this interface, it makes me quite frustrated. I don’t know why this was allowed to be released like this.

I concur with Aiken Paru on his comment about function vs. form. I know first-hand that designing complex user interfaces is hard. Especially when your userbase can throw a riot in Jita over something they don’t like. But you’re building an interface, and interface is an instrument to get input from user and provide feedback to him. Feedback is what we’re missing in the new map compared to the old one. As a player, and interface user, I just want to see the pragmatic approach to designing the tools you hand to me. Same notion applies to the new scanning map.

Wish you productive iterating and hope to see some fresh tweaks on Sisi soon!

Thank you.

Missing Functionality

  • Smooth transition while zooming from star map to a specific star system
  • Instant transition between selecting different star systems
  • Easy to read low-number statistics understandable at first glance [image]
  • Tiles to group the map not only through color of the stars [image]
  • Map rotation and angle reset button to defaults [image]
  • Background for the text information when hovering over many colors and lines of the map [image]

  • Quality of Life

  • Neutral background without stars to make the real ones easier to read [image]
  • Less aggressive waypoints route represenation (no cutted fat moving lines) [image]
  • Autopilot settings (normally availble through the "A" in EVE UI) available within the map
  • Non-blurry colorization of the stars for sharper and easier readings

Missing Functionality:
  • Ability to move the map controls horizontally and/or flip it to the bottom in fullscreen. In full screen the map controls are overlapped by the HUD when aligned to top, as seen here.

  • Will the beta probe and D-scan have its own feedback thread or is that part of the beta map?

    Missing Functionality

    • When the map in docked in Fullscreen mode, it does not honour the Camera Center option from the Display & Graphics options. This also applies to the new probe scanning map.
    • Use case: In a dual monitor setup, when using one screen as primary and one as a side-screen, it is difficult to use the map in Fullscreen mode as it will be centred on the screen split. This means mouse wheel zoom does not behave as you would expect.

    I hate it.

Difficult as **** to find how to switch to solar system view vs entire galaxy.

Markers that show bookmarks and other points of interest are small / obscured. Difficult to see.

I'd really like it if you did not force us to switch to the new one - like I assume you plan too in the future.

TLDR - It's ****. I hate it. Leave us with the old one please and just make it look prettier / up to date.

Hello, the beta new map has really bad performance,if i would say truly ,do i like it or not,i`m gonna answer negative, the new map is pretty unplayable ,i really like the old scan stuff/map,you must improve the old one, dont create new one, because is really not so good to play in this game, while, because of this my gameplay will suck..

    QoL:

    • Remove or let us turn off the zooming from star map to local system map; especially remove the scaling to the local system
    • also remove all the icons in local systems (or let us toggle it off)
    • let us make it flat (2d) not semi-flattened
    • try to navigate with the map; you got it down if you go to a random system and can read all gates it has in less than 2 seconds

I have a suggestion on the dscan cone. Instead of actually highlighting the cone itself, why not put the map into a scanning mode where only objects within the cone are highlighted brightly and everything else is greyed down with lower contrast. That way an actual visual cone will be unnecessary.

Then you don't even need a graphic for the cone, because objects themselves will indicate that it is pointed at them.

Just like the little targetable brackets around ships in space. They get little pointers when they are available to target and in range.

I can't speak for everyone but I'll explain why I don't use the new map, mostly I haven't had time to learn it.

    Feature

    • No option to change colour/transparency of lines (similar issue to the probing colour issues, everything looks the same)
    • No option to add/remove labels, I can't see the systems my route will take me through at a glance
    • Can't select 'solar system' view through map? requires probe window.

    Quality of life

    • Too much noise on the beta map (see features and points below).
    • Viewing the current system I am in shows me things I don't care about in a system view. Around 30 green lines and 17 systems in the background. (need to use probe scanner to access the map that I find useful).
    • Viewing my route to a destination doesn't show me the names of systems I am passing through.
    • I can't distinguish my route from the random green lines everywhere easily.
    • Statistics aren't as good (mentioned in original post).
    • Map is blurry when zoomed out.
    • Have to use probe window and access the map through there if I want to see the solar system view.

The bottom line is, If I use the beta map I take longer to achieve the same result, which usually means targets fleeing, time between the things I enjoy doing increasing etc. That doesn't mean there aren't some amazing features in the beta map, it just makes me a worse eve player.

    • Cyno Beacons should be much smaller
    • More contrast
    • No star background (or optional)
    • Make 1 person in space bigger (it's indistinguishable from no one in space)
    • Ability to mark all systems in jump range

    QoF:

-Dscan sphere / cone should be a different color than the probe spheres.

In the current state scanning an area where you happen to be can be confusing and hard on the eyes due to the probe and dscan spheres being the same color

-Fast toggle on / off for Dscan sphere and cone.

]If I'm combat scanning a target I like the most relevant information present with little distractions.

-Window stacking isn't that optimal when the map covers up your overview, dscan and probe window if made large on your screen. Staying with the theme of the old map where once toggled your overview and probe windows are present is much better and makes for significantly faster scanning.

-Signature scanned strength is less obvious now that the green bar is tiny and below the sig.

I find the change to the sig scanned percent to be harder to read and almost confusing at times if you're going fast. I'd like to see this feature returned to it's old state where the whole sig ID and bar would will with green the more you scanned it.

    MF:

-Wormholes do not show up in space on the new map.

This is an issue if one forgets to bookmark the return / entrance to a wormhole and there are lots of sigs in that system as you can no longer simply put probes over the WH symbol and one shot the hole

-Enlarging and reducing the probe spread size is sluggish and sometimes downright will not let you. It is as if there is a very small sweet spot.

I've found moving my probes in space and changing they're size is a very glitchy and frustrating at times. Some times I cannot change the probe size period without altering my camera view and even then it is as if there is a very small sweet spot.

Over all I like the new map but it isn't optimized currently to be easy to use both for information gathering and scanning. In it's current state I simply cannot use it as a fast scanner as it really slows me down.

    Confirming as others have alluded;

-trying to find people in space is harder on the new map; the statistics to see average pilots in space and/or those docked/active are not very distinguishable. If one person is in space or active, it has nearly the same shade as 2....or 3..... It does seem that 5 is slightly more noticeable but the old map is superior in this regard. The same problem exists for other statistics....I dont use it but the 'jobs started in the last 24 hours' simply looks like a bunch of yellow circles. I have to hover over each one to actually gain insight into the volume. 1 job looks identical to 56 jobs, for instance. Different colors and/or size of circles are needed. Something to differentiate the amount of stuff happening in a system. Having to hover over 50 systems is annoying.

-while not as functional, the new map is pretty

-when trying to change statistics, the 'popup' performance is relatively annoying as it minimizes after a certain time. If I am spending time researching the map, I would like the options to switch views to not minimize (or at least remain open longer). In this sense, beauty is taking too much influence from functionality. On the old map, the options are persistent.

-a plain black background (or option for it) would be helpful....the stars look nice but once again, it affects the ease of researching

-maybe I am a fool but I simply dont understand how "group" is helpful in any way (by constellation or region). Dotlan does this better and is more usable. It looks kinda cool but once again, I dont understand how/what it could be used for.

    Quality of Life:

    • Make the visibility between statistical differences like number of avg # of Pilots in Space more defined. Currently when looking at the new map there is no quick glancing at this map to determine between 1 pilot and 10 pilots in space. The current map much better a highlighting the differences in the heat map. Image linked below.

    • The map looks pretty and all but if you're looking for populated systems you have to tooltip over everything to show the pilot numbers. There is literally no visible difference between 1 pilot in space and 10 that I've seen. Heat bloom that again like the old map to bring the parity back.

      http://imgur.com/EKs3TAA

    • Focus current location function in wormholes still shows a shrunken window with in a full screen view. This has existed since the initial roll out of the beta map.
    • Example:
      http://imgur.com/vDSSmfc

      Functionality/QoL:

    • Make the tab function the same as it does in the out of map view to collapse windows. If you are full screen and you have an overview on the right hand side the close button is not available in Focus current location to take you back to the regular map.

    • PLEASE give the map window the ability to roll up in floating view just like if we double click chat/overview/any other functional window in game

    • Seperate the map controls so they aren't hidden at the top of the map. If you have chat windows or browser pinned you have to constantly shuffle windows to access these.

    • Missing:

    • When jumping wormholes the current map places a bookmark in space showing your entry point in the system. This is a nice feature to have and I think alot of people including myself want this going forward.

    Missing Funtionality

    • the new map does not show the lines between systems when in 'pilots in space in last 30 mins view'.

    • In other views you can see connecting lines but there is no indication of what system is which.

    • For a map to be useful it must show the connecting systems with system names and connecting lines in a reasonable radius (4-5 jumps) around the selected system

    • When I create a route I can not see the system names on the route.

    • I want to create a route following the populated systems. I want to be able to see what the system names are along that route and see what systems branch off the route systems (including there names) I am a wormholer and need to create a efficent route for a null roam and see what alternative systems I could jump into along the route

    • New Map Example of route and 'pilots in space last 30 mins' with new map. - Its completely devoid of any useful information like system names or connecting lines. Its not remotely useable..

    • Old Map Example of route and 'pilots in space last 30 mins' with old map - I can see what the system names are and see the connecting lines.

    Quality of Life Improvments

    • On 90% font the text and system connection lines are very hard to see. Please make sure the map scales with the font.

    Missing Functionality

    • EBR-42872 - When Beta Map is Fullscreen and you click Focus Current Location while in a wormhole, the system pops up in a window that is not fullscreen (takes up 2/3 of the screen), and the window is forced behind all other windows, obscuring the close button. Example: http://i.imgur.com/WNdk2Xc.png

    • Fullscreen Beta Map showing New Eden obscures Search "Magnifying Glass" behind Overview or Selected Items window.

    • Missing feature parity for Jump Range Visualization and Sovereignty Filter. Both of these were mentioned in the original devblogfrom December 2014 as "will be dealing with as soon as possible". Link: https://community.eveonline.com/news/dev-blogs/a-map-to-treasure/

    • Floating Beta Map does not minimize when CTRL+TAB -> Hide Windows is Selected. Use Case: When quickly minimizing all windows to take screenshots, or fixing windows that are partially out of screen, this window will block view.

    • Floating Beta Map is not an included window in CTRL+Tab window objects to minimize/open.

    • Floating Beta Map window does not obey other window behavior to minimize to just the window bar when double clicked. Use Case: Having the Map open at the top of screen, and being able to double click it to quickly open or minimize it to/from the title bar only. Only being able to Dock Left/Right is not sufficient.

    • Unable to remotely search for W-Space systems by J-Code/Locus, including Thera. Thera is viewable by searching and
    • selecting a station, but not the system itself. Use Case: Looking at systems in a wormhole chain to view system size, planet orientation, and empty space; see where bookmarks are, check planets for PI, check sun type, etc.

    Quality of Life Improvements

    • The Focus Current Location function needs a lot of work to make it more graceful in W-Space. The way the window pops up to view the solar system is jarring and intrusive, completely against the flow of the Beta Map when zooming into a system in New Eden. I highlighted other problems with the way this window works above.

    • The Cynosural Field statistic needs balancing. The Cynosural Field Generator (Orange) heat bloom circle for 1 in system is gigantic, actually larger than a normal Cynosural Field (Blue), or if there is a Generator AND and active Cyno in system (Red). Example: http://i.imgur.com/KMbiost.png

    • Heat Blooms overlap very easily when large, making viewing data absolutely impossible. The Cynosural Fields statistic is again a good example of this, especially when zoomed out. Image: http://i.imgur.com/s3uWqCY.jpg

    • Considerably reduce the circle heat bloom for any "1 in system" statistic. The solar system should light up to show it, but not drown out surrounding systems. This is especially important when searching from a high level zoomed out for system activity for locations to roam to for PVP. I primarily use the "Average Pilots in Space in the Last 30 Minutes", and "Number of Pilots Docked and Currently Active" statistics. Old Map Example: http://i.imgur.com/v7vG75I.png vs New Map Example: http://i.imgur.com/EFrtGeg.png

    • Heat bloom differentiation needs to be a lot easier to tell the difference from 1 and 2 in system, 1 and 5 in system, 1 and 10 in system, 1 and 20 in system, etc. There is a very slight color change as there are more pilots in system, but the circle doesn't grow a lot. From a high level it is very difficult to differentiate the statistics. For example when looking at pilots in space, these two systems side by side look almost identical. Agree. Also, as others have suggested the ability to turn off the background would allow my tired eyes to read this better.

    Other Quality of Life:

    • After spinning the map around, I want a way to quickly reset the map. I love the focus on current location, but another button to reset true north and return the map to a zero tilt/spin view.
    • For bonus points, another button would allow me to save my current zoom level, map tilt, and maybe even star color, line preferences as a default and snap back to it.
    • The search icon is set all by itself in the opposite corner of everything else. I just now found it, gah. Recommend moving it over with the rest of the icons.
