That's not the base skin nor does the base skin (or this one) have rust on it.

Yes but in that skin paint is degraded, faded, maybe base skins should be 100% ok when you purchase or build a new ship.

Just... uhm ... clean it?

I'm confused about what this thread is about...

Yeah, there's a button coming for that in the fitting window.

Please note that I have no idea if the patch is online already....

With the new system coming in today, yes you can clean your ships.

They'll start clean and become progressively more worn as they are flown and/or sit in a hangar.

There will be an option to clean the hull again.

Explained in this devblog:

http://community.eveonline.com/news/dev-blogs/dirt-killmarks-dirt-and-destruction-in-new-eden/

Quote:
For the past few months, every ship in New Eden has been sporting a fine patina of grease and grime.

Now, however, a new ship will start clean and accumulate dirt over time. The curve from spotless to soiled is gradual, but definite. Players will notice the difference, but everything won’t be covered in soot overnight. The accumulation is linked directly to the initial boarding date of a ship. The clock starts for any given ship when a capsuleer first makes that ship active.

...

With the introduction of this feature, every ship in New Eden shall be fully refurbished to a new, clean state.

Of course, clean ships are gorgeous, and not everyone will want to give up that sparkling New Ship™ gleam. We’ve included a method by which fastidious pilots can always automatically reset the dirt level on a hull to 0. In the left-hand panel of the fitting window, below the Ship Skin information, capsuleers will now find a button labelled “Clean Ship.”

And five seconds ago I discovered a major flaw in this system.

A flaw that runs completely against the spirit of the game ...
... and at the same time is extremely easy to overlook.

Still... I am horrified that devs didn't see that ... D:

Oh my, so happy you ask... :D

WE CAN'T MAKE THEM DIRTY ON PURPOSE!

There is NO weapons system or ammunition to increase dirt on a ship!

None!

How does that make any sense???

People can clean their ships, but no one can manually increase the dirt !

Where's the emergent gameplay in that ?

Why can't I keep throwing dirt bombs around onto people to force them to clean their ships ?

I WANT AoE DUSTBOMBS DAMMIT !

DUST MISSILES !

Literally unplayable !!!

just to clarify does the dirt/damage effect show only locally (to me) or server wide (to everyone)

I believe that would be globally, so everyone.

It's a visual effect that only takes bytes on the server.

Take your ship into a mission and let the NPCs shoot away most of your armor and hul to give it that "battle hardened" look.

I am currently away, traveling through time and will be returning last week.

I'm so lazy that in a few months I'll just be flying around in giant battle hardened dirt balls...but, the upside, 500% increase in armor...right?

It sounds plausible enough tonight, but wait until tomorrow. Wait for the common sense of the morning.

This is the Golem that once was a proud Raven hull and was made into a Flappy Wing Ducky and finally a scapped one at the end.

Enjoy.

We now know what ships look like when you take them 4-wheeling past ol' Smith's farm, but what about when it snows? What will my Caldari Raven look like with snow? Won't anyone think of the snow? Bear

There are some Caldari ships like Ravens, Golems or Scorpion and variants with a previous dirt and rust or faded skin. Maybe these faded skins should be changed. We've now a REAL dirt and rust feature.
