Could someone explain to me, please, what's going on in this kill?

Was this a "just because" gank? Why were so many ships in on it? How did someone manage to organize that many people willing to lose 100m+ per just to gank a poorly-fitted and empty orca? Did these guys pop a few orcas in quick succession before concord responded? Or am I totally off on what is happening? I'm just confused as hell. Was it not a suicide gank? I see a proteus in on the kill.

Sorry if these are idiot questions, but I have been out of the game for quite a while and don't remember seeing 100+ BSs ganking half-way tanked, empty orcas last time I was around.

That wasnt a gank. That was a kill right scam. Someone paid a lot of isk to activate a kill right on the Orca. The one who was killed made profit as the value of his insurance plus the cost of the kill right (owned by his alt) is more than the cost of the Orca.

Technically it's not even a scam as the buyer of the killright gets exactly what he expects: an Orca killmail.

If you fly into any trade hub you will see Orca's and freighter's with 300-800 mill open killrights. Many of them will be sitting on the undock as it is possible to activate the KR and then dock up instantly...thus making money and preserving the bait ship. One guy told me he made over 3 billion in one night before he got bumped off the undock and destroyed.

However, if you go to Amarr you will see several sitting 40-50 km off the undock, since even if you blow them up, with the insurance money plus the KR fee profit is still made.

It's a nice group activity....you get at least 5 buddy's together and everybody throws some ISK into the kitty to cover the KR fee and then pews are had. Everybody's happy...;)

Everything in EVE is a trap.

And if it isn't, it's your job to make it a trap...:)

Posting something like that is how some scam victims try to rationalise their silly behaviour when they realise they've been had. Is there something you'd like to share with the class?

Or if they activate it in a busy part of space, they get the chance of the killmail.

If brute force isn't working, you're just not using enough.

The fleet was bored while me and a few of the other Jr. FC's were still en-route, so we said they should crowdfund the kills, so the fleet members donated like 5-10mil each and they got like 4-5bil in kills before we left for our roam, it was also partly to test how fast our guys could react to commands and see if we had enough Alpha to volley things we knew would have more EHP then what we thought we would be fighting, the guys did volley a Freighter, that was pretty cool. But yeah, we used it as a training exercise, had Ceptors setting up pings so we would be in optimal of each target, I was still en-route in a Battleship, haha! Was fun though, and the guys liked it.

There was a ragepost on the Russian forums about half a year ago. Other people jumped the Orca on which he had activated a killright and "stole" "his" killmail. He appeared genuinely mad.
