EVE New Citizens Q&A

So I just finished all the carrear tutorials and like most players I'm lost. So I would like to get some advice.

1st- I either want to focus on combat our in mining, so considering combat I am doing some money doing security missions lvl1 but they dont give much money and people tell me that its hard to do lvl2 missions with my Catalyst and I cant afford a cruiser, so is this true, and is there a better way to get money doing combat without agent missions (not doing PvP)?

2nd- About mining is it a better money making method? And if I go the mining way do I lose much combat potencial, I want to try PvP later in the game and I dont know if I go mining I will even be able to because of the skills.

3rd- I didnt understand what is the advantages of going scaning and if it is a good money making method.

Mining in Eve doesn't scale well into the future - At the very beginning, it's a good option when you're new and kinda lost, but other money-making activities quickly out-strip it. Once that occurs, and if you've decided(like most, but not all) that mining is rather boring, you will find that the skills and equipment you've sought for mining are no longer useful, in general.

Here's what's always useful, though: Frigate skills, and cruiser skills. And the ability to fly a wide variety of ships, even if you fly them badly.

Since you know you're interested in PVP(good to hear - this game is largely defined by PVP), then I'd suggest training towards a cruiser. A thorax or vexor would be good, since it sounds like you've got a head start on gallente ships. The cruiser will support a wide variety of activities, including level 2 and 3 missions, which will escalate your mission-running income.

Alternatively, you could gain your ISK by other means.

Such as salvaging wrecks. The skills required to do it are quite mild - you want 4 tractor beams, and 4 salvagers. Fitting your destroyer for salvaging is a very solid early means of income. I made my first billion via a dedicated salvaging operation.

You could also look at selling your loot, salvage, etc at one of Eve's primary markets via sell orders, to maximize your profit per item. I wrote a little about that just now over here - https://forums.eveonline.com/default.aspx?g=posts&m=6198299#post6198299

The rewards may seem quite small during this early phase. They are! But once you hit your next breakpoint, such as level 2 or 3 missions, and can do them comfortably and safely, things will accelerate. Or you could focus on salvaging, or market trading - these things are not highly limited by your SP, but instead by how quickly you learn the ins and outs of the Eve environment.

Another popular means of income is Exploration. There are many guides out there on this profession. It's rate of income is irregular, and somewhat SP-dependent, but has high early payoff potential. Scanning/exploration is a whole 'nother topic, so you're better off searching an Eve exploration guide on google to get an idea of how that works.

And of course missions are steady and reliable. But it bores many people out of the game if they don't branch out. It's one of the weakest parts of Eve; it's a socially-driven game.

Exploration can be very good money for new players. Data and Relic sites in null-sec (and pirate sites in wormhole space) can bring a great income without having to do combat. Being in those areas can net you some great survival experience. With mediocre skills (a month of training, max), I was doing around 50m isk/hr.

Mission running doesn't really make great money at the beginning. Once you hit level 4s you can farm, farm, farm.

Another option is running the DED combat sites (or another sites that are probed out). These can drop faction or DED modules which, depending on what drops, can sell for good money. A list of the ranked sites is here. Other sites can provide escalations to other sites which build off one another and make you travel around.

The problem with exploration as compared to mission running is that mission running can be fairly steady income, while exploration is hit or miss. Some nights you may come back to your home station with 200m, other nights 5m.

Personally, I prefer exploration (data, relic, or combat sites) over mission running. You get a chance to see different areas, learn survival skills, and potentially shoot people or get shot at. All of which can be a great learning experience.

Do you get any bonus from the ship Masttery level?

I searched for some youtube channels that can give you detailed intro in exploration.

Here you can find guide videos named Exploration Character that includes Ship fittings, Skills, Hacking guide etc.

You don't really get an added bonus for the Mastery levels, but its not a horrible "table of contents" or "index" for navigating the skills you might be interested in. I would pick the ship I want to fly and work on the Mastery levels for that ship. I'm not saying that every skill listed under the Mastery is ideal and necessary for ever pilot, but it helps sort out all of the possible skills available.

UniWiki also has some pages on specific professions and they list all of the applicable skills for the profession. Again, not a bad place to start.
