[Edited for more clarity]

What's the fastest way in-game or out-of-game to type in my current null-sec system or region and see who owns it, and what kind of locals I should expect? (The 'Sovereignty' link in dotlan doesn't make much sense to me.)

Thanks! I feel like I escaped a crowded shopping mall!! null-sec and WHs feel SO good... especially in a CovOps.

On a more straightforward answer wormhole space is not conquerable. Only Sov null can be owned. NPC null and wormhole space can not.

Should be in the upper left hand corner near the system name. You'll see the Sov holder's alliance logo. Tooltip will tell you their name if I remember correctly.

Grrr.

Recon of wormhole systems is an art form. It is a skillset that is very valuable. You can start out by checking the KBs for that system. If you see the same corp or alliance showing up on the KBs then you know that they likely live there.

You can also use D scan to check how many moons have PoS towers. If you have a cloaky ship you can warp cloaked to the towers and do a show info and see who owns the tower. You can also see if it is active or abandon.

It's been a long time since I've been in wormholes and have forgotten more about intel gathering than I remember but those tips should be enough to get you headed in a helpful direction.

I'm sorry. I was not asking about sovereignty in W-space; I know that's not possible. But once I ended up in null, I was curious who owned it. I'll check the phrasing of my post to make sure it's not ambiguous.

It shows up in the upper left hand corner of the screen. The icon of the sov holding alliance shows up right there. I know hovering over the index icon show's more. I'm not in game to go through all the various ways that you can do it and walk you through them but it is not ambiguous. If you were having problems finding out who owned the system then maybe it was not owned.

I'll check when I get back home and logged in but I live in null and every time that I undock the sov holder's Alliance logo is staring me in the face. I know that you can click on the system name to get more info from there as well.

If you want to plan in advance, then Dotlan is the site to use.

http://evemaps.dotlan.net/

It tells you who has sov over the systems in each region, and for travelers, it will also tell you if there is a lot of pvp activity in the area and how recent it is.

ok so I am back home now. If you click on the system name in the upper left corner of your screen you get the system UI. The tab all the way to the right is the Sovereignty tab. It tells you who controls what.

In system there are also Alliance icons up for the conquerable structures in place. So things like: iHub, TCU, Station.

If you are not seeing any Alliance logos then my guess is that no one owns it. But for sure if someone owns the system that you are in it will show up in the system info UI under the Sov tab.
