"The API no longer makes any attempt to fake the quantity of materials being stolen by siphon units." - From patch notes

Does this mean CCP has completly given up on making siphons relevant? Straight

It doesn't really change anything.

The API fudging code was bad and you could detect siphons by API 100% of the time if you put in enough upfront effort.
Even the public, well known method (checking if a silo has more/less materials than it should) was reliable enough that it's all we ever needed to use.

Basically to fix the siphon detection work would have to be done on the EVE backend and no gameplay team was putting that time in. Since the problem was clearly not getting fixed CCP Tellus and I decided to remove the code from the API that was trying to fudge it as it just added complexity to the code base and we are trying to keep it clean.

Then... we need a gameplay team to work on this; it's fundamental to the disruption aspect the feature was designed for.

It's unbalanced for API-literate players to have no trouble at all remotely checking all POS's under their control, where non-API literate players who only use what the game client gives them - need to fly a daily route to check their POS's.

with the removal of api-clouding everyone and their grandmother can use things like evehq to check their corp assets abd see if something fishy is going on.

The need to keep the code clean is understandable, but this issue illustrates the advantage API-savvy groups have in game versus non-API savvy group.

The fact that this is even possible to locate siphons automatically favors moon holding groups, i.e. the already richest powers in the game, and prevent using the siphons as a guerilla tool.

If you can only change things on the API front, then remove the code giving out the moon output data, and replace it with an active/inactive binary information. Anyone can calculate by themselves the expected output of a moon, and this way siphons will only be detected by in-game patrols.

As for pushing everyone to use third party tools, it requires providing your API keys to third parties. There are no guarantees about how these third parties are going to use your API keys to their own benefit. This is Eve.

no we don;t. moon mining will be gone in about a year once the drill platforms come out (note i mean moon mining as we do it now, with the new structures this will completely change and siphons might become obsolete)

OMG Comet Mining idea!!! Comet Mining!

It's cool that it's one step easier for a 3rd party tool to alert users to this problem, but still requires a player to use a 3rd party tool to gain a significant and time-saving gameplay advantage.

This could be balanced for all players by adding an in-game Notification that a POS is "under attack" when a siphon unit begins its work.
