Press release: https://www.ccpgames.com/news/2015/ccp-games-raises-30-million-to-bolster-virtual-reality-development-efforts/

Press release wrote:
12 Nov 2015 – Reykjavik, Iceland – Privately held CCP Games, the leader in virtual reality immersive technology, today announced that it has raised $30 million to bolster the development of virtual reality (VR) content. New Enterprise Associates led the investment, with participation from private equity firm Novator Partners LLP.

The investment will be used to further position the company to drive innovation in VR as the technology begins to transform the entertainment industry.

Harry Weller, General Partner at NEA, has joined CCP’s Board of Directors and Andrew Schoen, also of NEA, will be joining as Deputy Director.(...)

So CCP convinced their nº 1 investor and new partners to invest in CCP's VR projects, whereas new partners will get 2 seats at CCP's director board.

What this means:

- CCP's future VR projects are interesting to investors
- CCP is investing heavily on said VR projects

What this DOES NOT mean:

- CCP's VR projects are not Valkyrie or Gunjack sicne they're already done, but probably something based on the propotype tech shown at Fanfest
- EVE is not getting any of that money, it's new money for new projects

The deeper reading:

- Hilmar is very, very, like extremely, interested on virtual worlds. So probably CCP's top brass feel like now they are going to do the real deal, what they as a company always dreamed of. It can be interesting to know where does this path take, since after all CCP and Oculus and Samsung and everybody else are taking a bet on VR as entertainment technology, the same as Microsoft is taking a bet on augmented reality.

- EVE is really going to find a new place in CCP's hearts if Consumer VR 2.0 succeeds and CCP gets right their investment and efforts on it.

This is like watching a train wreck with nuclear material on board. Big smile

From a business perspective, consider this.

VR tech is completely unproven in the industry, and Valk has no longterm roadmap. If there is any likely monetization happening it will be up front payment from enthusiasts for a package deal. After that, because no link is planned, no other monetization can really happen either. There isn't any reason to keep paying, so its dead in the water with a low adoption rate.

Think about that. Then think about Dust.

Super broken game, barely functional, on ancient hardware. SOMEHOW ACTUALLY PROFITABLE, due in large to its link, dedicated fanbase and incredibly tenacious lead dev Rattati. There is reason to keep investing, even though it seems madness with how much the parent company neglects it.

Now, from purely a business standpoint, would I want to invest in unproven technology with a very high chance of failure? Or would I want to double down on something that had a very difficult launch and is in a bad situation, yet against all the odds has proven to be incredibly resilient with nowhere to go but up?

Folks at CCP are doing some very emotional decision making because nothing here is grounded in logic. I tip my hat from an enthusiast standpoint, but they are about to get burned in a very big way.

As long as they get it done before we all have holodecks in our houses.

Oh, I perfectly understand, Hal Morsh — a mission like this requires courage, skill, and heroism… qualities you are clearly lacking. Have you forgotten you're one of the bloody immortals!?

It would be cool if the train didn't have a hundred thousand dedicated players on board.

CCP's dogged infatuation with VR devices makes me want to facedesk every time I hear about them pouring more money into it.

Remember what happened to the attention and quality of the game we are currently playing when they dropped millions into tragic vampire romance games?

This won't end well for us, the Eve user.

CCP Quant: Of all those who logon in Eve, 1.5% do Incursions, 13.8% PVP and 19.2% run Missions while 22.4% mine.

40.7% Join a fleet. The idea that Eve is a PVP game is false, the social fabric is in Missions and Mining.

Yes! It makes sense! After you locked your last game into a dead platform (PS3) you go for the stillborn platform (some proprietary VR ****) next!

It was always dead for you, it's simply taken you this long to realize it. For those of us who actually like EVE and fit in with the game, it's as alive as ever. My killboard filled with Imperious Bees is evidence.

Birds of a feather you two anti-EVe types are. Amazingly, both Market McSelling Alt and Lucas Kell have declared Elite the better product....but here they still are.

We are honest with our opinions. Meanwhile you continue to flag wave while the ship sinks. Truthfully, the fact that so many forum members are so quick to bite on obvious bait is the main reason I'm still here. When I run out of plex (or die of age related illness which is more likely) I'll disappear. Or you know, when they can EVE because it's an old failing product.

You ever take any time to look at your self? You are a (supposedly) grown man who can find nothing better to do with his time than to troll (see above highlighted words) on the forums of a game you don't like made by a company you can't stand.

I'd rather be the guy flag waving for a sinking ship than be anything like what you've become as a person.

I have to say definitely points for Jenn here, lucas just sounds sad.

Also VR is awesome, if anyones taken a look at oculus last talk you know how serious they are with the amount of research they're putting in.

I disagree

Heh. Only thirty mill? Not a lot of money these days. It's a good start. Cool

Giving up board seats for this sum? Ummm... Sad

And I'd rather be the guy that has a casual laugh than the guy who feels the need to psychoanalyse and insult everyone that disagrees with him on the internet. Each to their own I suppose.

At no point have I ever said that I don't like EVE or that I can't stand CCP, that's your inability to see any middleground between love and hate. EVE isn't as good as it has been and CCP have made a lot of mistakes and lost a lot of good staff and a lot of good players. Without players giving honest feedback, they'll have a hard time improving. *shrug*

You wouldn't know honesty if it bit you in the exhaust port of your Drake {insert name of some Elite:Dangerous spaceship here}. CCP gets honest feedback, from people who actually like and understand their game and can recognize when they make mistakes. "Honest Feedback" is not possible from people who start from a point of disliking core aspects of EVE and who wish to see it be something completely different from the get go.

You can call it psychoanalyzing if you want, but deep down you know there is something wrong with someone that is this interested in the fortunes of a game they don't totally like.

EVE attracts people you can't stand (CODE and Goons), yet here you still are, it has gameplay you think is shallow and not meeting it's potential, yet here you are. You think poorly of CCP and their stewardship of EVE and have stated so numerous times, yet here you still are. By your own words, You think another existing product (Elite) is more interesting and more fun...

... yet here you are. I've come to the conclusion that somehow you enjoy being disappointed in things. You and Market, I honestly have never once seen a post from you guys that seemed in the least bit joyful about something having to do with EVE.

That could be one of the very best things to happen to CCP. Accountability to something more than the old stakeholders could be the kick in the pants CCP needs.
