Impacts Storyline
The tie in with the EVE world gives the tournament more depth. It highlights the backstory of EVE for all those following the tournament and for those interested in RP it gives extra sparkle to their participation.

Accessible to the more casual player
Most of the matches didn't require a big investment in lots of expensive ships, fits or implants to participate at a competitive level. Additionally, for players like myself who like PvP but can't really spend weeks on on training (or have tens of billions in isk reserves), it is still possible to compete.

More diversity in the challenges
The restricted formats makes it possible for ships that would never see the light of day in a normal tournament play to have their moment in a public arena. It also makes for some matches that will you really have wondering what would happen. It also has less risk of getting in a certain meta (damp meta, drone meta, missile meta).

Well said, Merd, and I echo your sentiments.

Yes. Even with the issues with regard to ECM dominance, I think the succession trials has been my favorite EVE tournament to watch. The different rulesets in each match in particular is something I really liked. The teams knowing exactly what everyone is flying and having to make the best of it instead of pre-fight ban mechanics felt really refreshing.

This has been the only tournament i watched and felt that it wasnt bought and sold and paid for by 0.0 entities to get special ships.

I'm so very on board with this thread.

I love the small, easily accessible (not major ISK) format with encouragement (requirement) to use different hulls and strategies.

The lack of information on rules has definitely added some zing to the proceedings.

We only finalised our first round setups on Sunday morning, and we were still discussing our second round setups an hour before the fight started.

So far, the devs have done a great job*!

There was some talk of bans for the second weekend! I hope you don't do this.

Honestly, outside of the dominance of ecm (a relatively minor gripe) this tournament was hugely refreshing compared to AT season. It was a blast having to cook doctrines up on the fly, and the fact that there's been so many upsets (All PL teams out) shows it is a much much more accessable format. If there was a way to apply this to AT, or even use it as a template for a different style of tournament, I can see it being very popular with people mostly tired of the same old same old from AT.

As a mere spectator I wholeheartedly agree to this. Role-playing and lore aspects aside, this is much more fun to watch.
It depends on pilot skill in small teams with little time to prepare, not on deep pockets filled to the brim with Isk.
And it shows!

Here I used to have a sig of our old Camper in space. Now it is disregarded as being the wrong format. Looking out the window I see one thing: Nothing wrong with the format of our Camper! Silly CCP......

I have to agree with most of the opinions here. Except for the relative strength of ecm compared to other electronic warfare in this tournament, it's way more engaging and accessible than any other similar event that I've been around for. I never thought I'd be able to participate in anything like this, but here I am on a team that won a very tough bracket with two matches against extremely skilled opponents.

There are several elements to the design of this tournament that have made it more accessible. I've watched many tournaments in the past but never participated until now, only because of the barrier that there has been between me and the arena.

My team and I have made it through the first round, and we're really looking forward to the challenges of next weekend.

CCP, please continue to host different types of tournaments.

Obviously there was one glaring flaw in this format, even though it does have a very high potential. You can not overlook ECM in a racial exclusive tournament. ECM single handedly ruined day 1. Anyone who's hosted a frig duel tournament knows that ECM, even without bonuses, destroys smaller ships because they land more often than not. This was a very un-Amarr Amarr tournament day. There was no Amarr ewar to speak of. The guys at CCP have got to do better than that. It's like everyone was in on the joke but them. Either ban all race specific ECM or limit the amount of ECM modules any one team can field, and make it a low number like 3.
