Please look this video at least some seconds... the game is trackmania, a online car race game

Trackmania skin editor

I'm aware that implement this in EVE destroys the SKINs system, but the feature will be cool, very very cool.

Some people can specialized in design skins and sell it in the hub markets... miners, haulers, pirats, trader... why not designers making isk?

Well, another reason is that that sort of system means CCP looses any ability to moderate SKIN's, since they would have no real way of controlling WHAT manner of designs we players would create -- and I'm not just talking about designs that are vulgar in nature and intended to be as such either.

I'd be open to the idea of people submitting designs or ideas for designs for CCP to sign off on and work into the game, so long as the artist(s) is/are okay with CCP making money off of it and CCP is willing to, in turn, have the artist(s) name(s) well announced in some way with said SKIN's in game so they are properly recognized as their work. That might not be possible for legal reasons, but it would be pretty cool to see happen if it can. It might also be a limitation of technical ability. Even the one's that are in, simple in design as they seem to be, take time to test and perfect. Custom designs would be far more detailed likely and require even more time to pump out.

"Tomahawks?"

"----in' A, right?"

"Trouble is, those things cost like a million and a half each."

"----, you pay me half that and I'll hump in some c4 and blow the ---- out of it my own damn self."

is a good argument against the feature

the game could need load every skin for each ship in the actual system, with hi-res skins this surely consume large amounts of memory... anyway the charge work added to server, with actual graphics cards, is surely manageable

trackmania is a old game too, and manage custom skin from hundreds of cars sometimes, and the game run without problems

the problem, the whole problem, is load these skins when jump through a gate... the load time may be large

NO - I do not want to even think about the inappropriate skins that would find there way into the game if for no other reason than simply to offend a portion of the player base. We do not need that type of hassle in game.

NO - Because server related issues. Current skins are store in the client files so all the server has to do is tell your client that ship X has Y skin on it and the client takes care of the heavy work of rendering the proper skin on the proper ship. Your idea would require the server to transfer the image files for the skin to your client increasing the potential for lag especially in heavily populated systems.

NO - Database issues, instead of storing a flag that tells the servers / clients what skin is on a ship the database would have to be expanded to hold the entire image file for the skin. Not bad for a few hundred ships, but multiplied out by the thousands of ships in the game and this could quite literally become game breaking.

Addressing things posted by others.
Why should CCP pay artists for skins when they refuse to pay or even allow us to pay those people that created useful tools like EFT, PYFA, EvE HQ and EvE Mon just to name a few?

I would be glad to support an official system that would allow players to submit skins for CCP to consider adding. They have done simular things in the past with ship designs so I cannot see how or why they could not do it with skins.
