Maybe it has to do with the image of the action movie hero that Hollywood is trying to imprint in our psyches these days.

I used play male characters when I first started playing online games back in 2004.

I later started playing both and now I just play females.

I actually prefer looking at a female character to a male character, prefer female voices as well, although in this game it doesn't really matter as we have ships, so I tend to like good looking ships. After all it's not about sex it's about having something nice to look at as you end up looking at it a lot even if not in great detail. Plus in other games female characters tend to move better than male ones.

I'm a straight guy playing female characters these days, you won't get anyone more straight than me, some women play male characters for the same reasons. Playing female characters just seems natural as I don't RP the character, but I do RP the role of the character depending on the game.

But there are people that think guys that play females and females that play guys are odd, but that isn't the case. If anything is odd it's their perceptions of why they think a lot of players play opposite sex characters.

Getting free stuff?

In about the 10 years I've been playing female characters in MMOs I've never been given free stuff. Given a lot of free stuff away, but not received any.

Getting free stuff because of being a female character is just a myth.

Ok, so where is my free stuff?

It may have been more relevant back in 2004 and earlier, but it's not these days.

I've given loads of items/ingame currency away in a number of MMOs to both male and female characters that I didn't know (just randomly) did I give stuff to male characters because they were male, of course not.

I'm not a casual gamer and in all that time my female characters never received anything for being female.

A variety of reasons.

1) The most shallow of which is Tomb Raider.
2) Then there was Anarchy Online where I left it downloading, thinking I was getting a MUD. When it had graphics, I thought, "Darn it! This is shareware!" So, I just picked a fairly random character that was as close to an elf ranger as I could make it. Then lo and behold, it was a MMO, which I had never heard of. Via a progression of being invited to other games, I have remained Jenshae in all virtual worlds.
3) I don't like the humans species and more particularly, I don't like men generally.
4) Other reasons but I am bored of this subject already.

Damn. I'd seriously consider it if you could.

In fact, I'm taking this suggestion to Features and Ideas.

Even bloodline appearance wouldn't be too difficult. They already do that in the books.


Anyway it was supposed to be an upcoming feature three years ago but CCP happened.




I suppose I require correcting my previous statement to a degree. It's true you don't get free stuff just for being a female character (well... usually). You firstly need to make yourself a semi-attractive female character. Aim for a character that looks fairly young, as close to a teenage appearance as possible. This plants the wishful fantasy that you just might be that kind of person in real life, and as we all know teenage girls on the internet can be very trustful and, in some cases, downright stupid. Then learn how to appear generally helpless but with a sense of gratitude and loyalty. This is what feeds the false hope of "Oh, I'm gonna get something out of this later!" and opens up the victim to further exploitation.

Naturally, you'll want to stay the hell off of comms. Emphasizing you're shy can make stupid people want to white knight for you even further, especially when somebody calls you out on it.

If you think about it, there is no gender in this game. We are all androgynes. No nips, no poles, no holes.

I'd link the pictures to show it, but I got a stern warning last time I did that.
