EVE General Discussion

Eve for me is an hobby, an outlet to blow off steam which i cannot do elsewhere. Notable positive points next to that are; i get to know new people, i get to reinvent myself, i get to gain skills which i could actually use in RL to (to so degree), im having a blast when doing fleets with my corpies/alliance mates and stuff.

Eve is a virtual ball of whatever you find in the real world all rolled up in 1 and smoked, i have played many games but non of the games is as complex as detailed and player driven as Eve Online. If there would be an utopia game that governs all other games, this one comes closes.

At its core, I've always considered Eve to be a good (though not completely realistic) economic simulator. It's close enough for my needs, where I can see all the various external influences that can affect markets (remember folks, PvP *does* occur in stations). An excellent eye-opener and trainer when I'm ready for 'hardcore' mode (RL Markets).



I have a hard time thinking of Eve like that, but I was involved in Second Life around 2004-2008 and There.com (on and off) from 2005 to current day. Plus the original Uru Live (1/1/04, through two revivals, to approx April 2008). So my own judgement is obviously a bit weighted.

While I understand that CCP has considerations to branch outside the FiS model, I don't think they've understood (until recently) the magnitude of the problem. My knowledge of how the SL-style 'superclusters' work make me very pessimistic about the WiS model.


@ leavwiz - I am also a casual player, but continue to persevere through this game as a (mostly) non-combatant. One of the best things I did was get involved in a couple different PvP training programs, such as Agony Uni. Even if I don't PvP regularly (or barely at all), the skills I've learned - both character *and* player - are powerful weapons in their own right. And having a dedicated character with combat-related skills/tactics has been useful too.

The old adage of 'I only have to outrun you to stay alive' is very real here, and should not be taken lightly.

Eve is an amazing concept with potentially great entertainment value which is unfortunately destroyed, once you understand the fatally flawed mechanics.

Too bad , really. It could be a fine game, but as it is now, there is no "game" in it.

(This is not to say that there are no niches in it to keep you amused for some time.)

I've always loved science fiction/science fantasy, especially the kind set in a libertarian dystopia as EVE is.

Total waste of a hard on! I would much rather get together with a couple friends at the local pub, have a couple pints, talk with them and maybe some other people that we haven't met yet, shoot some pool, watch the local NHL team lose yet another game and make fun of the hardcore fans. I have always been fascinated with meeting new people. Most of the time, it's a lot of fun as long as there is mutual respect.

As for EVE, it is just another form of entertainment, a game I can play, when I feel like it.

That's right I'm a Han Solo or whatever that blaster slinging smuggler was named.

I'm an Elite vet a Frontier Vet and remember taking turns at Frontier on an Amiga 500 which was just the best machine back in the day and thinking how COOL would it be to have many players bouncing around trading and fighting. (CCP can we get Imperial traders and Couriers please :))

So to summarise what I am hearing.

1: Eve is escapism.
2: Eve is cheap.
3: It has a harsh beauty.
4: It is played for fun.

So fun so far fun seems less important than more comfortable escapism. On that note I like how in eve my character proceeds without me needing to be there to mine experience. I like that in Eve Experience is something I personally gain while my toon studies hard at physics, geology and thermodynamics.

According to the list so far I don't see any reason why people should curse 'space barbies!' with such vitriol. I did notice that I couldn't give my toon a paunch he is ripped to perfection maybe that's the genetic engineering?

Why does discussing WIS cause people to talk about what EVE is more that discussing what EVE is?

Eve is at the moment the best multiplayer SciFi game around that does not constantly hit me with the "Pay-to-win"-hammer.
I had nearly two years of inactivity, and why there are some new things around (hey, I have a body now! and planet stuff), I see Eve mainly as when I left: a big potential to be the best game ever, and if CCP would finally realise that their theme of "cold, harsh universe" is a relic of the early age of MMOGs, it would be able to reach that potential.

Also, the community radiates the morbid fascination of an autobahn accident involving three Polish trucks that should have never been allowed on the road, a bus full of school children and a pensioner group on their way for tea and cakes: it's horrible, it's disgusting, it shows you which kind of people should be hung from the next lamp pole, but you just can't look away.
