How many EVE players die each year?

After seeing a TMC article on the honors for the death of a fellow EVE player, I had a stroke of grim curiosity and asked myself: "but, how many EVE players die each year?"

Ater all, EVE players constitute a large demographic, and we know that mortality per 100,000 per year means that, on average, that amount of people in a collective of 100,000 will die each year.

Thus I made some napkin calculations based on US mortality data by age split, applied it to EVE's demographic split, and it averaged on some 350 deaths per 100,000 per year... That's some 1.050 EVE players who die each year, or some 20 each week.

Kinda scary, right? Bear

Received a message this weekend that a fellow player died I'm flown with many times and talked on comms ... I was shocked and didn't feel like continue PvP this evening ... I read a couple of RIP threads on Reddit but this was different...Sad

EvE is not different than life, ofc, we are all humans.

I should put something in my will. The will's executor has to log in as me and post a "Leaving EVE" post in GD. "Been fun, but I found an awesome new game. It has a kind steep learning curve though, and looks hard to win. Besides that, due to some recent changes, I really don't enjoy playing EVE anymore. And also, because of RL demands, I just can't log on very often anymore. Well, actually TBH, I don't really have an RL anymore." etc. etc.

Then, attorney has to come over to OOPE and study on the Can i Haz rules, and distribute the stuff equitably. It would be a hard job. "9 unfit Rifters for you. 1 pair of space boots for you. 21 Kruul's DNA to you, the other 12 and an Atron to you." Actually, it could be tied up in space litigation for years. Years upon years! ha ha ha! ha ha ha ha...!

Edit: No disrespect to our fallen mates intended. Happy Halloween, all ye. Smile

I would love to get a smart chat bot that uses my forum posts to write the same way that I do. Then when I die, a computer program keeps logging into EVE and talking to random people that way that I would. Same vocabulary and grammar structure. Might even be possible to bot it so that my character would keep flying around fighting and making ISK after I was dead.

EVE is becoming shallow and puerile; it will satisfy neither the veteran nor the "WoW" type crowd in the transition.

That's brilliant! Maybe the same application could send out tweets as well.

I got so close to flying my Leviathan, but then I died. REST IN PEPPERONI ROBERT SAWYER

On a side note, don't compare EVE players to US demographs - not all of us are Americans.

I know. I just did a quick napkin calculation and used a easily accessible statistic data for mortality by group ages.

Ha, true! And if people troll more and behave worse on the internet because they're anonymous, and immune to many repercussions... how badly are they going troll if they're already deceased? No consequences at all!

(Wait, can you gather bad karma after death, if your pre-programmed robot is still actively trolling people? Hmm.... might be a question for the dalai lama or the Pope.)

P.S. WB Gray! Where you been?

On an eve detox my good man. But like an awesome case of herpes it has returned.

EVE Online addiction: a more awesome form of herpes yet just as socially disfiguring.

Farewell social life. I didnt need you anyway!

Depended on who made the bot.

Mine would be active within a limited space and only draw upon these forums for ways to speak.

20 eve deaths a year is like 250 subbed accounts probably. game can't suffer that sort of attrition too many more years. i'm not all that sad about it. does that make me a bad person?

It's 20 deaths a week, or in excess of 1,000 per year. Cool

Might be worth viewing it from another angle. 'How many EvE players experience death IRL every year?' It's relevant as the community ages, because people playing for unusually long periods are likely to interract with others who lose people.

I haven't played closely with anyone who has died (that I know of) but lots of people report family/friends dying. If people stop playing I just assume they're busy IRL/have changed games. I'd rather if anything happens to me ingame friends assume the same and don't start panicking. Although last time I quit some did mailspam a bit. Felt quite bad over that because the messages were increasingly worried over an 8 month period, and I didn't pick them up until resubbing. The 'I am quitting' posts (even tho some are a bit ranty) don't annoy me - at least people are leaving a record that they're off to something else rather than just disappearing.

Ingame in medium/large groups at any time there has always been someone with a RL issue that they either report on internal forums or mention in chat. Some just keep quiet about it, but start acting out - there's always something underneath that. That's why I tend to view people mouthing off in local/on forums/in chat etc with some caution because you can't always tell if the person has just had a really bad day.

I have lost a fair few people online (I tend to befriend older players and I am approaching a decade of gaming) and even had an attempted suicide and a murder in real life. (Although, if you live in South Africa, that isn't all that uncommon)
Online:
1) Died from lack of sleep and food at her keyboard as she was playing too much; left behind a husband and children. (Woke me up to this danger)
2) Paraplegic died of a heart attack, leaving behind a wife, some grand kids and had already lost the parents of some of those kids.
3) Cancer case, only found out about her when she progressively got erratic, turned out that was due to medication in the last stages of dying.
4) Car accident.
5) Some possible bogus cases so they could see their own funeral.
6) People disappearing suddenly.

Real life:
1) Failing biology, father diagnosed with Cancer, wants to be a paramedic and girlfriend leaves him, shot himself in the head with a .22 hand gun and lives, temporary speech impairment and paralysis down his left side. Bullet still in his head, too deep to be removed.
2) Friend worked for real estate agency in JHB; went to collect rent, was stabbed and thrown out of the 10th floor of a building.
3) Hair dresser / family friend of 10+ years was killed by her husband who was drunk driving, took them both out.

Honourable mention: Working as a medical call handler, had a woman call up to say she was in the bath holding a toaster, she had tried pills and been resusitated before. So, she was calling to make sure someone else other than her family would find her body. (Other suicide calls sounded more like cries for help.)

People die. To mourn is to mourn your own loss. They feel nothing once they cease to exist.

Not one yet that I know, but 2 of my family members died, and there are other serious military problems.
Those problems could lead to worst than death...
