I'm preparing to start my first solo roams to learn PvP the hard way. I'll be fitting 4-6 different hulls to get a feel for how they handle, and most of the price estimates I'm getting from Pyfa are 6.5M ~ 8.5M.

Is this in the ballpark, or am I overspending on ships destined to suffer a horrific fate?

I'd call that a deent ballpark good sir. Seems my rifters falls right in the middle of that quote.

Fit meta 1-3. Google scrapheap challenge, or RvB fits, those bums know how to fit their cheapboats.

If you're fairly new to the game and new to PVP then fit T1 unnamed or meta 1 stuff, cheap and cheerful. The few % difference in performance you get from splashing out on named mods won't make a difference as you need to gain experience to make it happen. Remember that insurance very much lowers ship replacement cost so the hull itself is actually cheap to lose, draping it with expensive mods will then make it less cost effective. You can lose a lot of insured T1 fitted frigs for the cost of a good meta 4 mod.

If you have good income and can fit T2 then sure, go for it.

Excellence is not a skill, it's an attitude.

Most if not all of my RvB frigs fall around 5 mil. The T2-mods and the rigs set you back that much. You can save a lot by dropping the rigs and using meta2/3 where the T2 isn't vastly superior. I'ld still count on about 2,5 mil isk.

There is however a noticeable difference between these fits and the 5mil fits so you'll be at a disadvantage vs similar fitted ships. I'ld recommend the more expensive ones. Above these, there are the almost-10-mil-frigs. These fly the meta4 and t2 mids. The upgrades are nice but IMO not when you still lose a lot of ships to your own mistakes.

TL,DR: spend 5 mil, downgrade to meta3 where necessary

Sounds like I was planning to overspend somewhat for someone with no experience. I will scale back a bit and see if my survivability improves over the next couple weeks.

Many thanks, gentlemen. o7

Ditto this.

I fly a Rifter solo quite a lot in RvB and this is how I typically fit it. You can fit up 20-30 with mods pretty cheaply and not worry about burning through them. Just make sure you insure each one before you undock (something I typically forget).

If you want some fun light reading on the subject, check out The Solo Files;

I moved back to T1 frigs from AF's, but still like the AF's for low sec. They are a bit more survivable and you need the DPS in my opinion out there in the wild lands

Thanks for the response. Though it sounds like a worthwhile read, the site tells me that the file does not exist.

TBH, I'd suggest meta 1-2 fittings all around. That'd get you well under a million per hull, even on a (relatively expensive for a frigate) rifter. Possibly even half a million.
Throwaway is throwaway. As in, pocket change for even a miner. Hand them out like candy, blow them up for a laugh.

Especially for learning pvp solo. You'll need a few of everything you try, because you WILL lose ships. Best to stockpile full fits, IMO, so you can just shrug off the loss, hop into a new one, and go.

^^^ This is the way to go. When I was learning PvP this is how I did it. I took 30 mill isk and fit as many meta 2-3 ships as I could with it. I still have some of those ships lying around various places after 3 years. After you lose a few you start to catch on and they last longer :)
