POS: Dreadnought deterrence

I've set up a POS in lowsec. I've done some of the obvious things: it's a large tower, 3/3/2/1 hardeners, no major loot pinatas, piles of ECM, stuff like that. I think the reward-to-annoyance ratio should be bad enough that smallish-mediumish subcap gangs won't be interested.

However, one guy with a dreadnought could come by and ruin my day pretty good.

So now I'm wondering, what can I do to deal with that guy? Is there some combination of guns and neuts that can make a group with one dread and, I dunno, a dozen cruisers or something, decide that maybe they'll bother some OTHER tower?

Nope.

If someone really wants to dunk your tower, the only thing that will stop them is a decent defense fleet.

POS defenses are about annoying them or making your tower harder to dunk that some other guy's tower, they won't actually protect you from any serious attack.

Dreads in siege are immune to ecm....

But yes they only make the tower more hassle than it would be worth. If someone really wants that moon or really wants to kick down your sandcastle only a good defense fleet will repel

I will share my tower setup with you.

I had a large dark blood tower in low sec, mining some moon goo. I put 1 em/1 therm hardener on just to balance the resists and push shield hp to about 92,000,000.

I put up my mining arrays, and my hanger. I then set up 3 disruptors, 3 webs, 4 citadel torp arrays, 6 cruise missile arrays, 3 small arty cannons, 12 med pulse, 12 small pulse, and 6 small beam lasers, along with 1 of each ECM.

Now, everyone is right in that if a group wants your tower gone, it is going to get bashed into the ground. However, this should give you a pretty good deterrent against a small fleet wanting an easy target. And well if it goes, they are going to lose some ships.

Hope this helps.

A solo dreadnaught? Well a few neut batteries and 3-4 warp scrams, plus enough blap will do the job.

but as said above, if someone wants to kill your tower badly enough, they'll defang your POS with subcaps.

Finally someone mentioned neuts :)

To kill a sieged dread with a POS, one typically uses 3 energy neuts, a few warp disruptors, and large turrets.

They typically don't attack from range >60 km , but can, so long-range turrets (artillery or beam lasers - rails work, but suck horribly against anything else) are recommended.

The only thing a POS can defend against on its own in lowsec is a casual solo player or small subcap gang.

The real defence for a POS is a formed up fleet.

Once someone is willing to commit a capital, they almost certainly have backup handy too, and mostly are coming with multiple capitals.

... which is also covered in my links above.

Particularly WHY not to use them: rate of fire sucks (24s), damage multiplier sucks (1), require CPU (off-line when reinforced).

The POS modules were designed long ago when missiles were significantly more powerful than today, and have never been re-balanced since.
