If you point a gun at a person, it should not be just to make a point, or to scare them. It should be with intent to shoot. If your life is in danger, you don't shoot their leg to incapacitate them. You shoot to stop them - permanently.

That said, +1 for the mom, as she not only defended her house, life, and child, but also did it in a most glorious 12-gauge fashion.

Of all the things for a stalker to encounter, a woman protecting her child is the LAST thing he would want to go up against.

Personally I would have used a longbow. Much more classy and not as much mess.

I instruct in the use of firearms, and was for a time an archery instructor and having known veterans who used bows to take out sentries. Afterwards I have taken on knife-fighting instruction in Sayoc.

And after all that, I have drawn one conclusion:

It's better to be shot.

Given a choice between a broadheaded arrow with penetrating tip and expanding blades and say a .45, I would take the bullet.

Given the choice between being ice-picked by an FN 5.7 or having a Emerson Kerambit shoved into the space below my left armpit, then down and across my abdomen (j cut), then up across my neck with a follow up to either the leg arteries or the perinium (that in the balls), the former would certainly be a little "nicer".

Here's a funny thing: people have been so conditioned with the concept of guns being end all be all weapons of instant death, mainly by TV where someone gets shot with a little pocket rocket gun and drops dead on the spot (I recall a case where a guy was hit six times with .25 ACP and after being hit, he proceeded to beat the guy who shot him into a coma), that people who have been shot and wounded in a non-fatal manner have died anyway because they were so convinced.

But also in the other way, people have been shot fatally and didn't know it, and kept fighting or running they they bled out.

That's actually the first rule of gun saftey -- never point a gun at anything you don't intend to shoot.

+1 to the mother for defending her family-- proof positive that you do not mess with Mama Bear.

I can't get rid of my darn signature!  Oh, wait....

Lol, like voting even matters in US.

Even more lol at the obvious political stereotpying and dirt throwing going on in here. So many weak minded people not able to think for themselvs. And they play right into the hands of the political "parties" in US.

******* crazy. Is this what society has become. Where we all just sit around and say this kind of barbaric behavior is Ok.

Now days it absolutely fine, just go ahead and pull that trigger like you are not talking to someone on the phone. In my day when you were talking to someone you paid attention to them, took the time out of your day.

Now it is all Multitasking. Shooting that guy while talking so she could get back to her "You Tubing" and "Face Booking".

Downfall of a civilized society.

When was society ever civilized? Any of them? The babarian is dead not the civilized law abiding citizen good for her. I bet you live in a little utopian spot in the world and never worked or had to know a hardship or fight for anything ever. Just handed to you like entitlement merry go round.

Lol, this attitude is so pathetic. "Oh no, someone did not have to work as hard as I did, therefor their opinion is invalid becuase only I know true hardship and am "entitled" to the benefits". Not to mention most of the people having this attitude is so ignorant as to really know why they need to work hard in the first place. (hint; they are being exploited by a messed up system and therefor woking hard within that system supposedly makes them superior in their own little minds, becuase they have been made to belive that that systm is how it have always been and should be. While actually working within the system just reinforces the systems and the discrimination it imposes).

Luckily, there are still some good countires in the world that get most things right. I ahppen to live in one of the best countries in the world. It is a collective effort to keep it that way, even if I did not have to fight for it a couple of centuries ago. (Hint, it is a scandinavian country)

Ya, I do think the husband did some shady stuff before he died. But in any case, I wouldn't cross a female with a infant of any species.. Dangerous I must say.

Shotgun defense, nice choice of weaponry to use. Little to no aiming required. But leaves quite a mess!

while I checked the article. Saw few titles that referenced the 911 operator "ok to shoot." Very misleading. :(

Makes you wonder if you can sue the perp's estate (and/or the second perp) for the cost of cleaning up and the cost of the ammo.

Norway got its faults, but it has yet to stoop down to US levels at least. Still, it is going in the wrong direction, granted, mostly due to outside influences, but it is doing so very slowly. I still get free full health coverage, free college education, and very nice benefits. Also 5 weeks vacation from the get go. I am currently working an OK job in engineering, and I am living very nice and can afford more or less what I want when I want (if I so wish). And I no debt whatsoever.

I did grow up, when I started to think for myself. Common misconception is that you grow up when you "conform" to society. But that is not true. I can highly recommend it to you, the experience of actually using your brain is quite interesting and one of the most rewarding things you can do in life. it is not easy, it takes a few years to really get the thing going properly after your teen years. Though some never get it going, and it is quite sad to see old people still buying into quite frankly ignorant ideas and traditions. And since I live is such a good country, I had the opportunity to do so without becoming a debt slave or work for minimum wage in several jobs.

So who is it that really need to grow up and mature? And why does it even matter if some do or do not?

Jut that you felt you needed to say it confirms a lot of my opinions about people like you. You feel threatened by new ideas and new concepts. You are afraid by what you do not know, and you lash out at others who might hold different opinions instead of discussing and thinking about it. Instead of inquiring about why some hold the ideas they do, and try to analyse and understand.

Oh well.

Reminds me of a book I have detailing encounters with grizzly bears. It's said that getting between a mother grizzly and her cubs will get you dead. And a grizzly can run for 400 yards, catch you, and kill you, with its heart shot out. Those animals survived the ice age because of such prowess.

In one account, a human mother and her kids encountered a mother grizzly with her cubs, and neither backed off. The mothers were not going to abandon their kids, both acting on fear for their kids. It took around 30 minutes for the situation to diffuse as both parties backed off slowly.

Got to love the "make my day law" (thats the actual name). It allows you to shoot and kill any trespasser once they have forcibly crossed the threshold of your home. Im a current Oklahoma resident. We may have some wonky laws, but this is a good one.Cool

What she has had to go through is a bit different from battlefield 3 or call of duty. I hope she recovers from it and doesn't end up with any long term issues.

Ugh

Guns contain a lot of scary elements. There's a flash, a loud bang, a super-fast pointed piece of metal. It's very hard to deal with these things. Also, the guy who was shot was probably an oppressed minority who was racially profiled before being blown to smithereens for no reason.

Lets just clarify the reason the cops were shooting is because their comrade got hit by a car on purpose. Pretty god damn valid reason.

EDIT: I hope the mother involved (OP) is alright and won't suffer any long term repercussions. All the best to her and her child Smile.

That's a good way to get yourself killed. If you genuinely believe you are threatened enough to need to shoot at someone, shoot to kill.

Technically you don't "shoot to kill" you shoot to stop, if that means they ultimately die then they die. Telling police or a court "I killed them on purpose" could get you a conviction for unlawful killing.

And anyone that is worth the weight of the gun they wield should know that you shoot for the largest surface area. It just so happens the largest surface area is between the gut and the neck. Unfortunately for those being shot in that general area, there are numerous vital organs.

If you shoot for something relatively small like the head, the arm, or the leg and miss, you better be ready to suffer the consequences.

EDIT: And by consequences I did not just mean the angry intruder, but the innocent sleeping in the bed on the other side of the street, or in the car driving by...etc.
