Thing is, I command my ship to open the can, not to fly to it. I don't want to fly to it. I do not command that.

If you are further than the distance required to open the can (2500m) then your ship will travel to the can and open it when you press "Open". Similar behaviour can be seen with docking in stations and jumping through stargates.

This only happens when the can is outside open range (2500 metres). Just don't click it when it's outside that range and the ship won't move. I believe this functionality also happens with drones you order your ship to scoop.

It's an awesome feature - same as AP auto docking!

You just want to be able to click "open" while sitting there and not opening anything?

It's very annoying in slower ships. Where is the option to turn it off?

Yes. This is not a good default behaviour because it causes the ship to move when you don't want it to.
Being able to turn it off (and not just after the fact by ctrl-space:ing) would be very much appreciated.

It's far more preferable to be told that, no, you can't open the container because it's too far away, than to drift out of place and now be too far away from the things you'd prefer to actually be close to.

That feature doesn't allways work, e.g. when docking. I press Dock, ship warps near station, and does not dock. Shocked

If you don't want your ship to move simply refrain from clicking open can on a can that is too far away.

I would argue this is just because you are used to the old behavior. I personally prefer only having to click once for two commands. Making it possible to disable this default behavior through an option would be nice, but IMO is totally unnecessary. It would be far more important to document EVE's features.

…and that would work if the client and server distances were always perfectly synced.

Fair enough — I prefer to have my commands separate so I can decide for myself what the ship is supposed to do. Being told “sorry, no, it's too far away” means I can now use my other command (approach) to do what needs to be done.

Maybe a better solution would be to allow for limited command queuing (as long as all commands go towards the same target). This might also solve the “lemming button” some are experiencing… P

Before it just put up a message saying you had to be within 2500 m to open something, I much prefre that the ship goes and opens it for me. If I did it by mistake and didn't want to actually go loot a container or wreck, then I would just stop my ship, not so hard. The really sweet surprize I got was when I clicked to open a wreck 150 km from me and it warped to it then opened it.

I think that you should be able to turn the move to the can then take from it behavior on and off. Sometimes you would like to loot a can but would prefer to not be able to loot it than have your ship go towards it (Like if you were looting en-passant in a mission or PvP scenario)
