5) People who quit over getting ganked in 1.0 - 0.8 will also quit the game when they are ganked in 0.7 - 0.5 as far as changes to high sec goes, I have not seen a single change that made high sec safer that caused an increase in players. In an environmet where gankers had a much easier life the game kept growing, making it safer did not help with getting more players interested especially not long term players.

I actually like this idea. But limit it to level 1.0. Except for Jita. All forms of pvp combat is disabled in 1.0. This would be the perfect solution to all those carebears crying about being ganked. We can point to them and say "you have a safe zone, use it.".

Meanwhile CCP axed like 60% of its staff already IIRC?

Are they downsizing or.....cutting off their limbs while trying to stay alive?

WOD staff cut,

presumably most of the legion/dust staff cut.

most of the art staff cut.

Supposedly they've gone from 680 staff down to 200-something.

Not good. Will they still have the manpower to continue with the 6 week new update schedules, the continuation of the ship rebalancing, the continuing improvements to the new Null Sov structures?.

So many still blaming plex. What did some of these players do before plex? Why were there so many people before plex. Plex is a nothing issue in this discussion.

Main thing that has killed eve so to speak was the winning of null. That is really when a large fall happened. Is why the changes to make null competitive.

To quote Lfod Shi

The ratting itself is PvE. Getting away with it is PvP.

By that you mean dropped from 1.3 billion to 1.2 billion :D

The high PLEX prices will mainly drive away people from poorer countries with poor US Dollar exchange rates and the unemployed.

No idea what percentage of the EVE population that group makes up. If most of the players are US and Central European anyway it may make little difference.

Remove incursions. Raw isk is no longer being dropped into everyone's wallet. Isk is worth more. Plex prices drop. Missions are completed, markets are formed, loot and salvage is stolen and most importantly; Content is created.

Except Null Bounties need removing first in that case as the single largest source of raw isk in the game. Incursions are the third on the list, and are regularly being run in low & sometimes in null atm, as anyone bothering to watch their journals on incursions for the last few weeks will have been able to tell.

This thread has been on page 1 for a month now. Are people really quiting this game as rapidly as this thread indicates? Everytime I Iog in, the Online numbers have been around the same as it was during the summer. Peak hours log in numbers are 32k-24k and the rest of the day it's been from 22k-14k. Those numbers have been pretty consistent for the past 6 months. I have no problem with the plex prices as long as they DON'T go above 1.5 bill. But I can't say the same for the majority. If the plex prices continues to keep rising then it's inevitable that the user base will drop due to lack of volume being purchased. In addition to this the biggest impact on the lowering user base is the new Sov mechanic which CCP is still in the early phases of revamping. Until CCP can get the new sov revamp working perfectly, I don't expect to see any rise in user base. It will remain at these levels until then as long as the prices in plex don't exceed 1.5 bill, in which case it really will start spiraling downwards to the point where CCP may no longer be able to balance the books.

We went from 36k average active players to 18k in just 1 year ... thats 50% less players.
2 years ago EVE had the active player record of 65k players ... nowadays i rarely see more then 20k, except on weekends.

how about you play more and whine less?

that 65k players was heavly driven by ccp on one day, we where trying to break the record, it never hit 65k again.
they where asking everyone to log in every alt. it wasn't a realistic number at all.

stop the mindless EVE is dieing shite and just do your side of the bargain,,, play!

I do believe there were almost 40k people on when I logged in yesterday.

Summer break is over, numbers should start to rise.

Also, CCP seems to be trying different things to bring more people in, and keep them around.

for me it was the obviously wrong priorities where obsolete module icon changes and ship skins were prioritized before the rescuing of assault frigates from the dark abyss caused by tactical destroyers as well as the now completely ruined interface comprised of colourless blocks (and don't get me started about overview icons!).

CCP need to get their priorities straight.

I think more New Player oriented content would be good.

Something to get the hooks into them while they are young and to tip them onto the staying side of the fence when the moment comes to upgrade their trial account., and particularly for the many who feel they need a bit of incubation before jumping into the real universal content that EVE offers in abundance (but which can be quite daunting to get started on).

The concerns of more longtime players are, imo, more in adjusting/diversifying existing content. Small changes here and there, to keep them satsified pending introduction of more universal content somewhere later down the line (which also will attract back other longer time players who have left temporarily for whichever reason).

TLDR:
-New Player content to bring in and retain fresh meat for the grinder.
-Small changes to existing systems to streamline/rationalise them for existing players.
-Plans/hype for more new universal content down the line, to return lost players, retain the old and enrich/develop the game world.

Sounds like a reasonable plan, dont you think?

I think more smart advertising would be good. No advertising - almost no new players. There is always room for improvment but only certain type of players will prefer this sandbox over balanced and instant PvP games, that can be played for free. And without advertising (really agressive one) such players will hardly find their way into our universe. "This is Eve" was step in right direction, but not used one, IMHO.

I agree entirely.

Only 2 weeks ago, for example, did I even realize there was a whole database of "Scope" video material.
I was impressed with the quality and had great fun watching them, as well as felt inspired by them.

Another interesting notion regarding advertising, is utilising the player base to do so.
There are very talented videomakers in this community.
The advertising blurbs during Tournaments for example are an absolute riot.
Many capable bloggers/writers too.

Perhaps CCP can do something to incentivise more "viral" community based marketing and advertising?

Its a huge asset, waiting to be tapped, provided the right incentives and direction.

There is no content because there is nothing worth fighting for, except consentual pvp. ISK is almost free
anywhere in the eve universe. My friend that played 2 weeks made plexes for 3-4 months than he quit.
Most of the interesting people in eve left, banned, etc... and they were content creators good or bad.

I also think more advertising would be great.

Here in germany I see TV comercials for crappy Free 2 Play MMOs all the time.
The only time I see EvE adds is in browser flash adds that I probably only see because I play EvE in the first place (I think we all know how crappy the flash adds work)

They should make a good TV combercial (Maybe use the "This is EvE" trailer as basis ) and get it running a couple of weeks to raise attention that EvE exists.

We had huge new player spikes after the last 2 big battles that brought EvE into public news sites. I was aware that EvE existed but only got to start when the news of asaki got me to look at it closer. And Im still here with two accounts.

I still think the anxiety about declining PCU is stupid and demonstrates a narrow view. ALL mmos I know of are showing signs of decline (with "quick fix" MOBAs on the rise), and at the risk of agreeing with Divine Entervention, it may have something to do with a generational shift than anything else.

When i started pre-school, Jimmy Carter was President of my Country and telephones with buttons instead of dials were the hot new thing lol. The kind of experience an MMO gives me...fits...with my preferences which are 'slower' than younger folks tend to have. But every day more and more people who never knew life before the internet and cell phones are coming of age, and so much stuff competes for their attention, and their money.

The point here is while everyone seems to have some idea on how to 'fix' it, at some point you have to consider the idea that there IS no fix that makes a game like EVE grow while staying true to it's MMO roots. We all just might be part of a dying breed.
