The PVP Shakes: Sharing the experience of your first solo PVP

I may have an older toon, but I will be experiencing the world of solo PVP shortly and let me tell you. My heart feels like it is going to explode every time I am red-boxed (panic disorder). I have an admittedly terrible record so far (mainly from getting ganked early on) so... I am interested in hearing some of your stories.

How did you overcome the PVP shakes?

How do you keep your concentration during an unexpected encounter?

How do you control your modules and heat in an easier way?

What were some of your worst blunders?

What were some of your least expected kills?

Maybe this will be a good experience for everyone! I'm excited to hear all of your stories! P

Try drinking a scalding cup of coffee immediately after your first (successful or otherwise) PVP encounter. The results are...interesting, to say the least

Practice and/or 'I still get them'.
Practice and/or eliminate all other distractions if possible.
Practice and/or hotkeys.

Fight enough people over time to become confident in your skills and the shakes will lessen, but not go away completely.

Most fights arent unexpected, but mostly trial/error. Youll say after the fight "why the hell did i do that?" And learn from your mistake to be more mindful of it in the future. If you've ever played played dark souls, its similar, but 100x more complex.

Im always overly cautious with heat on guns. But do use it frequently on tackle/prop. OH guns when their tank is stressing or to burn through shields on an armor fit. Or burn through armor on a shield fit. Or their 10man gang is about to land and they are in structure.

Attacked someone we were at "war" with (without the dec) in LS and died to the gate guns in 5 seconds.

In the beginning, i loved killing things in my bait tornado. Also, soloing an omen in a claw was amusing too.

I would highly recommend you record your fights so you can learn from your mistakes, and maybe even make dank pvp vids from them one day. Also watch other peoples pvp vids to learn the strategies faster.

PVP in T1 frigates to start. Since you are not actually losing much isk, it takes that pressure off.

Secondly. Remember when you were in public school and had to give your first presentation in front of the class? And your Dad helpfully told you to think of the audience naked to take your mind of the jitters?

Well, you can do the same thing with this game. Don't think of these guys as players. Think of them as more aggressive NPCs. It will allow you to focus on what you need to do instead of what they are going to do to you.

Hope that helps.

How did you overcome the PVP shakes?
Alcohol! Or making someone else go first.

How do you keep your concentration during an unexpected encounter?
Squeaking IRL. Pelvic floor exercises.

How do you control your modules and heat in an easier way?
Dunno, just madly press buttons and hope for the best.

What were some of your worst blunders?
Forgetting to press certain buttons, like point. Or forgetting to fit guns before fighting someone, never living that down.

What were some of your least expected kills?
Baiting a 6b pimpfit wardec station hugger smackmonkey as a noob with other noobs. They dropped the dec the next day \o/

How did you overcome the PVP shakes?
Never really had them personally, but plenty of corp mates have them. One guy in corp gets so nervous when he solo pvps that after a fight he can't even hold his mouse anymore for about 5 minutes.

How do you keep your concentration during an unexpected encounter?
I think that's where the fight/flight syndrome kicks in and the slight boost of adrenalin helps the concentration. Natural response to any unexpected situation I think.

How do you control your modules and heat in an easier way?
I try to organise the layout of certain modules consistently on screen, irrespective of the ship and fit. Propulsion, scram, web, guns, damage control, etc. always in the same spots so my movements to switch them on are always the same and I don't even need to think about it at all. It's just reflex.

What were some of your worst blunders?
FC, I burnt out my guns - and that's when I'm solo. Happened to me just the other day fighting a Hawk. He couldn't kill me either so we ended up both dropping point/scram and warping off. He had 7% structure left.

Closely followed by occasionally burning out my MWD.

I used to warp to 0 to FW plexes and occasionally bump on the acceleration gate. That cost me a few ships after being tackled while not able to activate the gate quickly. Now I warp at 10 always. Still land in range to activate the gate immediately, but never bump.

What were some of your least expected kills?
I once killed a Revenant, but no killmail was generated. True story.

Well it was a public event and about 7500 people in system all shooting it, but I'm sure I got the final blow.

Mash approach with the MWD on and pray... before you know it, you're in facehump range and hopefully he melts faster than you do. If you're not stoned, you try approaching with some kind of angle of attack with traversal math running in your head. When in doubt, run away sideways.

I rarely fight solo. When I do, I'm either running away, or just screening for a bigger fleet.

My first ratting carrier survived just over three hotdrops, fighting solo, scoring dozens of kills. I wasn't even at the keyboard most of the time.

I keep my concentration by making the fleet sing to me on comms... That has got the reavers through many a structure grind.

I got over it by going out again and again and again until I ran out of play time.

Ships are very affordable if you put the right buy orders up :-)

There are good ships,

And wood ships,

And ships that sail the sea

But the best ships are Spaceships

I jumped through a wormhole 2 jumps from Jita and was greeted on the other side by several Sivpul pilots. I don't recall getting shaky, but I was laughing when my ship and pod evaporated instantly and I got to see my body frozen in space.

Once, I took out a caracal for cruiser pvp when I was a total pvp nub... thanks to an update to the fitting screen, you were allowed to put on weapons without having the skills for it.. Well so there I was, found a frigate, immediately engaged it, and realied my launchers were offline. Goodbye caracal.

This is a signature.

No it's not a cosmic signature.

Probably.

I used to get them when I first started too, but eventually they wore off as I got more and more kills. However they never completely disappear.

Recently I was getting owned by 3 full neut Domis in my active tanked Rattlesnake while waiting for backup to arrive. My corpmates can vouch that I was brown pantsing on comms as I was hitting structure before the first Domi died and the reps started to hold. Couldn't even hold my cigarette properly after that.

How did you overcome the PVP shakes?
I started about a week into playing. I would just fit a ship together, generally with whatever modules I could, and just go out. I had a small grasp of where to go PVP at. Though, the person who got me to start playing was a big PVE'r so I got very little help with how to fit ships. My -very- first pvp loss was to a Moros' warriors. I just went out with no fear.

You never really get rid of the shakes until you've lost ships. I didn't have the shakes in PVP in a very very long time. When I lost a Nyx back in November was the first time I had the "shakes" I guess you could say in probably 2-3 years. Even with that though, I was calm up until I was in Hull. lol

How do you keep your concentration during an unexpected encounter?
Eyes, knowledge of what people are bringing and expecting people to bring things. If you expect it you can plan into it.

How do you control your modules and heat in an easier way?
Practice.

What were some of your worst blunders?
Well, We were fighting snuffed out in Deven about a week before Thanksgiving 2014. I had two hics and a nyx on field, a pair of eyes in snuffs home system and a moros on standby. We came in with the supers. Did our thing, we had a ship light a cyno above us. One of our nyxes warped off. After a few minutes some hics came in. Pointed one or two of us, one of our supers about had a stroke. We killed some hics, they ****** off. We went to leave field. I clicked to warp off to my safe in system, went back to paying attention to my two hics. After about 30 seconds someone says "One of our supers is still on field." I look over and hey, its mine.
I noticed I was doing a 180 warp, which was weird but I went with it instead of cancelling. Made additional safes in warp and such. Landed 10 off a poco. Clicked to warp to one of my bookmarks, nothing happened. A different bookmark, nothing. A third bookmark, nothing. Said **** it and cloaked. Started moving a cyno.
I didnt announce anything, which I should have but meh.
I landed about 20 off snuff box links that were cloaked, off this poco. Which was very unfortunate.
Snuff logs in supers, i watch them as they literally come on line, thought nothing of it.
15 seconds later got a cyno 12 off my nyx. I call for evac cyno and I am having over jump button. Snuff grabs a point on me before I click jump.
Fight ensues at this point at my nyx. I am remain calm, getting depots blapped before I can refit. Focusing on killing hics, pushing out ECM bursts off one of the Navpocs right ontop of one of the hics. Broke armor, still working on the hics and remained calm. Hit hull and started to get the "shakes." Blew up. GFs in local.

What were some of your least expected kills?
Hmm, really all my kills from the days I was in Black Legion when I first started to PVP. But i didnt know about anything, I was really just an F1 monkey that joined fleets and went for the fun.

Really the big thing that gets rid of ships is just realizing, its a game. You can get a new ship if it blows up. Just enjoy the game, enjoy the pvp and have fun. Buy and fly stuff you aren't willing to use, if you dont undock a ship because you dont want it to die. Don't buy it :) Shakes go away and you remain calm and collective while fighting. :)

My first solo PvP encounter was in Amamake, I was in a Rupture with Torps and I met a Celestis in a roid belt, whom also had Torps. At about 55km from each other, by the time we hit each other with the first salvo, the shaking was over. I didn't kill him, he didn't kill me. There was plenty of time to warp away.

So, I guess you could say... I had an unusual first encounter with PvP.
