crashes when undocking from stations

I have been experiencing lots of game crashing when undocking. the station doesnt become visible, the game stops and blanks out and it quits or i have to quit.

it also has happened when exiting gates occasionally.

im not technically minded, is there something i should be checking or changing in my settings to try and reduce this? is anyone else suffering the same?

using win 7 64
