If you would have bothered to read the short article you would have read this: "Geologists have long sought tranquillityite in Earth rocks, partly because studies of lunar samples suggest that accurately measuring the proportions of radioactive isotopes in the mineral could be used to ascertain the age of the rocks."

It is not useless. And then again this is fundamental science, not applied science, so usefulness isn't an issue.
