In light of the successful contest last year I am pleased to announce a new writing contest for stories or poems by Capsuleers .

This year's contest will be co-judged by Ayallah and Silver Night ) and Holy Mother Alizebeth Amalath. All three judges will judge all three categories (as outlined below).

There is no minimum length. Maximum length is 30,000 words. There is no required subject matter; the content may be fiction or non-fiction. All entries will be considered. Submissions are to be made by posting on Eve Forums - Eve Fiction. Your post should specifically reference at the outset that it is being submitted for consideration in the YC 117 New Eden Capsuleer's Writing Contest. If you have a good reason why you want to make a private submission, then contact me privately as to why.

Deadline for submissions is October 30th of this year.

Winners will be announced at the special gala on January 17 at 22:00 at the Golden Masque (Thank you Morwen Lagann!).

The contest into has three categories Poetry, Prose, Academic (News/Treatises/Etc.) with five awards for each.
1st; 350 million
2nd; 250 million
3rd: 200 million
4th: 75 million
Honorable Mentions: At Judge's Discretion - 20 million isk

Winners will be invited to give a reading at the Holy Grape in Emperor Family Station in Amarr (depending on length, the reading may be limited to selected excerpts..

With respect to Silver Night, his favorite also gets to have tea with him.

With respect to Holy Mother Alizebeth Amalath, she will provide a home cooked dinner with her famous cheese cake for desert to her favorite.

As the judges, Ayallah, Silver Night, Holy Mother Alizebeth Amalath and I (as administrator) are disqualified.

All entries will be considered.

if the quality of the entries does not merit the number of prizes, then prizes will be given up to the number deemed meritorious.

if people have any questions or need rulings, I am the contest administrator and you can feel free to message me directly.

The most "amusing" or "entertaining" to me gets treated to a candlelit dinner by me at a fine restaurant.

I also thank Norrin Ellis for his contribution towards the prize pool.

((All submissions are expressly subject to the TOS and we certainly do not claim ownership. The submission of course, however, must be yours.

Note for ISD - This is specifically an In Character/Roleplay thing - a writing contest to be done by characters, not the players. The expectation is the submissions, whether 'fiction' or 'non fiction' would be in character to the capsuleer submitting it and people will have rp as part of the process. ))

To signal our intent to participate, we share with you a poem. It is not our submission.. since it is placed here instead of in the required forum.

Written for a friend we lost on Sosa IX. Our use of pronouns at the time was different than now.

I was cold
when you were cold
at the Wake
where we sang
as you were Underwater,
that I loved you
could not say
through the fog,
want to Run
to you on my legs
but I have
so much to Live through
for you..

I don't see how you can be, whilst maintaining your faith. The judges panel is effectively Amarrian. By definition, should a submitted work be 'heretical' or blasphemous, you would have no choice but to reject it or betray your own deeply felt beliefs. If I were a Minmatar revolutionary poet, for example - or even a Gallentean writer of gay bondage novellas - I would have no confidence in the impartiality of religious dignitaries judging my work.

The judges should be chosen to represent all cultures in a balanced manner. I applaud the proposal for developing and exhibiting new literature, but the selection and judging process is deeply flawed.

Perhaps instead of whinging about it, you could make your own secular writing contest?

Last year I was the only judge. This year I decided to invite a honorable Caldari in judging the prose section (one of the two categories that received the bulk of the applications) and am pleased he accepted. Because my current responsibilities as CEO of SFRIM have been rather time consuming, I asked the Holy Mother to judge the other category that received most of the contest applications, Poetry.

I think in its short history the contest has been shown to be fair. Last year the winner of the Prose Section was loyalist Minmatar and we had prize winners from across the Empire and other spaces in all 3 categories.

It's not a whinge, nor do I dispute that the prize givers may do what they wish with their money.

I simply note that the competition is inherently biased by the judges' religious beliefs and that any claim of impartiality cannot be sustained.

I think the rules of a competition should be clear. However, as you imply, I'm sure it's none of my business and I wish you well.

No matter who you put in charge, they will be biased by their own doctrines, ideals, or simple upbringing...

What would you propose instead sir... ?

A panel of judges from every culture, each masters of literature?

I made a proposal in my first post. Alternatively, as has been implied, the competition can be characterised as being religiously moderated.

For example, there would be no point in me encouraging my Minmatar employees to submit (via myself or another capsuleer) some of their new ballads celebrating the demise of the Empress Jamyl, which are - despite the subject material - delightfully melodic and exemplars of the Vherokior lyric saga - because the Holy Mother of the Order of Jamyl could not, in all conscience, do other than bin them immediately.

Perfectly fair stance, as long as it's made clear, that's all.

Pity the contest is for yet another year heavily Amarr biased. I'd have considered it, but given the judges panel I think it'd be fruitless.

A pity that Ms. Del'Thul and Mr. Kinnison think it is impossible for multiple cultures to co-exist in a contest.
I encourage each of you to enter if your talents lay in the literary arts. If they lay more in prose, I note the judge is only Silver Night.

I will note that winners last year included the follow who could hardly be confused with Empire loyalists:

Karynn Denton, the leader of a Thukker Caravan (2nd place in Poetry), Literia (1st place in prose), Jade Blackwind (3rd place in prose).

The contest winners will be announced at a function held in a neutral venue, the Golden Masque.

I don't think its becasue they think its impossible for cultures to co-exist....Just they fear that any writings that goes against the amarr faith will not be judged fairly due to the beliefs of the judges

Thus not being a truly fair competition....I however have hope this will not be the case

It's less a matter of cultural co-existence and simply a matter of an unfortunate blatant bias in the judges panel.

How can you all shout bias before they have even judged anything?

Because, humorously, they are massively biased themselves.

Simple matter of loyalties. If I set up any form of contest with my own loyalists on the judges board, I'd certainly expect to be considered biased. It's rather unreasonable to expect otherwise, given the state of New Eden today. If I had even the slightest intention of making something unbiased, I'd try and get a more balanced panel of judges and if at all possible excuse myself from it.

Oh, and yes. I most certainly am biased. It'd be rather dishonest to pretend otherwise when you have clear and open loyalties, don't you think?

Contest updated.

I am no longer a judge.

I thank Ayallah for stepping in to take the 3rd judge slot. All 3 judges (a caldari, an amarr, and a minmitar) will judge all 3 categories.
