I agree. Invention is shady, looking at the info pages tells you next to nothing about how it works. Without actually trying it or asking players, you've really got no idea what to expect.

Yet a quick google search gives a neat formula + calculators for it. Even if it didn't - for most invention stuffs, finding out the relevant chances will cost some 100mil + a weeks worth of work (most of which is just waiting). What more could you ask for? Or are you looking for stats on how much invention is done in various areas?
