Let's debunk some myths regarding combat boosters - particularly booster side effects!

At the Synth level, all boosters offer a benefit of 3% bonus to the effected ship attribute - except Synth X-Instinct, which only offers -2.25% bonus to Signature Radius.

It should also be noted that, like implants, boosters have assigned 'slots' that preclude the mixing of certain boosters' effects:

Slot 1 - Blue Pill (shield boost)
Slot 1 - Exile (armor rep)
Slot 1 - Mindflood (cap)
Slot 1 - X-instinct (sig radius)

Slot 2 - Drop (tracking speed)
Slot 2 - Frentix (optimal)
Slot 2 - Sooth Sayer (falloff)

Slot 3 – Crash (explosion radius)

You cannot, then, take Blue Pill for a bonus to shield boosting AND have X-Instinct active at the same time for a bonus to sig radius - one will cancel out the other. Likewise, one cannot pop Drop and Sooth Sayer for bonuses to both tracking and falloff - sorry, Wolf pilots.

Now about those penalties...

Many pilots think that if they don't have Neurotoxin Control (-5% severity of side effects incurred) and Neurotoxin Recovery (-5% chance of side effect per level) trained to 5, they're going to suffer crippling penalties to their ship's performance for the sake of one bonus that could easily be achieved by upgrading to faction or deadspace kit. This simply isn't true!

Each side effect listed in the description of a Standard or stronger booster has a chance of possibly occurring - those chances are 'rolled' individually. Your base chance for incurring an individual penalty is:

Standard: 20%
Improved: 30%
Strong: 40%

Which means that each of the 4 possible side effects is 80%/70%/60% likely to not happen at all. Clearly, then, even without either of the expensive neurotoxin management skills trained up, using Standard strength boosters (and enjoying their much more significant performance increases) is perfectly safe, Improved is mostly safe and Strong is safer than not.

It should also be noted by the savvy capsuleer that even if one does suffer a single side effect, you would have to earn the hatred of all the gods past and present for more than one side effect to occur simultaneously (maybe 2 at the Strong level).
