I am sitting here thinking about all the fun i had playing FFXI. I played it way back in 2004 and lvled a paladin to 75 on Odin server. FFXI is about 10 years old, alittle older than EVE i think and it is still around. I am not really sure how many people still play but i think EVE still has more. And it sure was a lot easier to make friends in FFXI than EVE.

I made the mistake of deleting my main toon many many years ago and tryed to start over again but its just so hard to do. With all the new theme park games like star wars and guild wars 2 coming i have no urge to play swtor or gw2. Why dont companies make games like FFXI and EVE anymore? I cant stand the new MMO market. Angry, sad, old gamer out. /turns on Selbina music

Add Ultima Online to the list, before it was destroyed by Age of Shadows and subsequent expansions.

GW2 might actually be fun, it has a few new knacks to it.

But the game I'm really waiting for is ArcheAge. Check it out if you love an old-fashioned sandbox-MMO.

I don't understand.

FFXI stands out from the other dismal titles in no way what so ever. It made no attempt at anything new or good, launched with ridiculously bad balance and a stupid server system that kept friends apart and it was mismanaged just like all online games by Sony.

I'm going to go out on a limb and suggest, based on your statement about making friends, that you had a good time playing it because you hooked up with an excellent group of people and not because the game was anything special.

FFXI was by square enix btw. Also there were so many new things that came out in that day and age i cant list them all. However, you are probably right about the group of people because i can still remember the peoples character names i played with 8 years later. And i cant remember what i ate yesterday llolool.

I can't stomach the standard MMO format.
I feel like a jack ass chasing carrot-on-a-stick PvE rewards.

GW2 is my hope only because it shakes things up. It's end-game world v world PvP means you're playing towards a goal of strength for a purpose beyond just MORE PvE and the area effects, collision, and dodging mean it might be more interesting to play that PvE anyway. I'll be pre ordering collectors and logging on day one. I don't know for sure that it will be great, but I'm gambling on it because it's frankly the only game in town for someone who doesn't want the standard formula.

DAOC is an "oldie" too, but not the oldest. It had the best pvp of any MMO i've ever played. However pvp was the end game, and it encouraged guild/alliance play and desire to capture territory and upgrade it.

i think Square Enix just bailed on FFXIV. Apparently its going to be gutted and become a reskinned FFXI. You might check that one out if you want a fresh start at FFXI.

Yea i have been keeping track. Seems like it will be sometime 2013 lol. TBH i really really hope it is a reskinned FFXI and a lot of other players do also. It would be the best thing SE has done in awhile.

If they seriously bailed on FFXIV and are retooling it to be a FFXI-2 this is the greatest news I've ever heard. Although I don't think I could stomach starting over from scratch and my character is likely far beyond recovery as it's some 4 years since I cancelled my account. I have fond memories of FFXI, great friends were made and great times had. I never went back to it because I never wanted to taint those good memories of ye olde dunes parties before CoP was even in the works. The time investment is another turnoff. I just couldn't do it all over again.
