Practice kiting in your small ships. It will give you a basic handle on ship control which become absolutely vital in small scale PVP (The best scale PVP, btw) or high end solo exploration. Use double clicking in space to move your ship, try to keep your target just at the edge of your optimal range (for a laser ship). If you still take too much damage, use a weaker crystal for more range. I suggest using the coercer fit above. Bring Infrared standards and Multifrequency crystals.

EDIT: I'd really suggest mastering the coercer instead of moving to an Omen. Learning to do this in a coercer will make you a better player where as moving to an Omen will likely not teach you anything except how to fit a cruiser... Which is useful but you can learn that later. You can't fit a ship until you know how to FLY a ship.

Pfft, gank is tank. In a level 2 mission, if you ain't killing them faster than you can lock them; something is seriously wrong.

remember, as a pretty new pilot you can never have good dps. to fit a good tank is much more easy for a new pilot than to fit more dps.

T1 destroyers aren't really a good choice for PvE as they're purely focused on damage output and lack the layout for a strong tank. A well fit cruiser, even with low skills and named T1 mods, will tank so much more than a destroyer and should be able to eat level 2 missions easily; even some level 3s.

Pfft, T1 dessies can handle level 2 missions easily if you fit them right.

More than enough tank. More than enough DPS..

Yes, definitely no problem completing level 2 missions with a Tech 2 fit up on a Tech 1 Destroyer. Great for older experienced players.

The problem is that most newish players doing level 2 missions don't have the skills to do that fit up.

Hello,

generally speaking:

L1 - frigates
L2 - cruisers
L3 - battlecruisers
L4 - battleships
L5 - carriers

For those who are English-impaired and don't understand the meaning of "generally" (not you, Tomski, but there will be the inevitable "lol i runz l4s in my assfrig n00b"):

you can run L2s in a dessie, but need at least half-decent skills to do so. When I see that your Coercer puts out a whopping 96.9 DPS I would say you're not there yet. Same with your cap issues.

Similar thing applies with the other, higher level missions. E.g. you can run L3s with HACs, L4s with assfrigs Roll or L5s with T3 cruisers and so on; but it takes a decent skill set to do so efficiently.

Fake edit: regardless of your skill-level, the only L4s you can run somewhat efficiently in an assfrig are, off the top of my head, Cargo Delivery and Recon. Really.

Very good advice, especially for newish players who haven't done max training on their Core Fitting skills.

He's getting 97 DPS with a Coercer.

Moving up a ship class compensates for low skills early on. Just like level 3s can be easily run by a veteran in a well fit T1 cruiser, but for a new player a BC is more sensible.

If you really wanted to use a destroyer for 2s I would just run drones out of an Algos or Dragoon. Those skills will serve you well as you venture out into the wider world of Drones Online.

Frankly, your entire EVE experience will improve once you have a few million SP in drones and drone hulls. I know mine did. It's like lowering the difficulty setting on the game.

@OP, it's easy to make your chosen ship better. Right click on it, choose "Show info", select the mastery tab, train the skills that will get you to at least level 4 mastery. Level 5 mastery is a nice goal to shoot for, but will take a long time in some cases.
