This might seem silly, but how would one make use of this? I am having trouble seeing the benefit.

Is it literally only to enable couriers to drop off sell orders on your behalf without having to go there in person to set up the sale / being able to perform arbitrage by selling off the stock you've been building up at a station via long-term buy orders when the price rises?

it lets you put up sell orders and update current sell orders, it can be very useful if you do other activities, like for example if you mission run in the forge and can update sell orders in jita at the same time.

Edit: I mixed up daytrading and marketing, but basically the concept is the same, I'm running a mission, buy order fills, I throw the buy order up as sell order, daytrading then lets me update the order

Isn't day-trading used for updating current orders?
And isn't it limited to same region even when maxed out?
And don't you need to actually transport the goods to wherever you're selling them, and thus can just put the sell order up when you're doing that?

Well yes, you need to be within the same region and you do need to have the items in the station you want to sell them in, but for me I just station trade in Jita and run missions in the same region so the skill is very useful for me to basically do station trading in jita without ever having to go there.

This diagram could probably use a bit of improvement, but may be helpful: <http://dl.eve-files.com/media/corp/Thoraemond/eve-trading-skills-for-remote-orders-20101217.png>.

Marketing is extremely useful when you regularly sell at a station that is different from the place you manufacture or acquire goods. If you use couriers to move your finished goods to markets (a common practice for larger scale operations), this skill lets you remotely list them once they reach their destination.

It is also handy for when you need to sell an item somewhere for any reason. Say you had boat load of loot moved by courier to Jita. Instead of flying all the way there to sell the goods, you can just fly until you enter The Forge region and list them remotely.

If you post regionwide buy orders, Marketing lets you sell the goods in place regardless of where you presently are.

Exercise: place a region-wide buy order for Tritanium.

If that doesn't make you wonder if there is a better way, then nothing will.

It's worth doing at least once, if only to be amazed that someone will manage to sell you one single unit of trit in each and every backwater system on the map.
