Sure, throw the baby out with the bathwater...
Yes, that's what you're suggesting, when the simpler and more specific solution is to turn off the notifications that are bothering you.

We can turn off Like notifications? I had no idea. Must try to find...

And that is, what it means to receive a like.

As in usually seeing that liitle orange text box is a good thing while your trolling about the forums, it means someone understood what you said, agreed with your point, got the joke or just generally 'liked the cut of your jib'.

An enmasse like fest just lacks that, most likely you didn't read every post, and it quickly failed to have any meaning (except getting right up the noses of the more intolerant around here). Wake up with half a dozen notifications, Oh yes it's just DS on that mad little mission of hers/his. Roll

I appreciatte the sentiment don't get me wrong I just think the application left something to be desired. There's probably easier and more effective ways of spreding a little of the milk of human kindness...

Anyhow all the best

I considered that beforehand, but quickly realised I often don't actually use the like system like that and it didn't fully apply to what I did anyway. I agree with many posts and get most of the obscure jokes and references, but I almost never like a post because of that. I also like post not because of their content or entertainment value but for all kinds of random reasons, so I must assume others do it too, which means there is no single yardstick for measuring and comparing likes. The system is already full of likes, that go against the purpose you use to give meaning to them. There is also the facts to consider, that what I did was a temporary thing and I gave most of the likes as an AOE effect, meaning every post in the thread got one. The end result was that everyone was liked, but the normal bumps in the likes were still clearly visible. So if your post was special, it still clearly stood out from the rest of the mass.

I'm not trying to say that you don't have a valid point, just that it's a minor issue and sort of an side issue. From the start this was my personal project and it was meaningful to me. I just hoped some others might appreciate it or at least not be bothered by it and take the likes for what they were. It was also a temporary event that lasted only for a short time during the holiday season when nothing else was really happening, so any harm done should be minimal. You have the rest of the 360+ days of a year to enjoy the illusion, that every like you recieve is because your posts are packed full of awesomesauce or that people agreed with your post 100%.

I'm open to hearing your alternative ways of doing things though, I really am, because I can't think of any good alternatives. What could be easier than sitting in front of your computer sipping a hot drink and eating pastries, while clicking buttons and skimming forum posts and posters? It doesn't require massive resources or a network of willing participants to achieve, just some dedication from a single individual. It's also quite effective, since I can reach a decent portion of the playerbase with it and a nice bonus part is that it's an active portion of the player community. If you can think of something better, I'd very much like to hear it.

I truly genuinely liked this post.

And to show it, this is the only post in this thread, that I will not like :)

…or more accurately, I doesn't particularly care about likes because I don't notice them. I turned like-notifications off when the old new forums went live in… March? April? early Triassic? and at first I was very confused about what the whole upset was about until someone reminded me to go back and look at the settings page. Lol
