i was reading about how NASA has awarded contracts to private companies to help them achieve the goal of reliable and cost effective access to space, its funny that this goal is part of nasa's CCP (Commercial Crew Program)

this made me curious if our own CCP would someday be interested in awarding contracts to 'community made teams/corporations' that have the capability to help ccp achieve their current goals. ccp would work closely with the teams and oversee the creative process from start to finish, there would be high performance requirements. the teams would be awarded large amounts of ISK to help with the development of the new 'technologies' depending on how well they are doing and who seems to have the best shot at delivering.

Interesting approach... CCP maintains and manages the core concepts of Eve, while outside competing teams of content devs tackle various aspects of the game. One thing about that that instantly raises a red flag is "intellectual property" disputes and the gaggle of attorneys that follow. I think we have a quasi player dev system that provides a similar function, albeit no tangible remuneration is given. Maybe someday. Big smile

Civil discourse is uniquely human. After all, when is the last time a pride of lions and a herd of water buffalo negotiated SOV over a watering hole? Never. Someone either gets their ass kicked or eaten. At the end of the day someone holds SOV.

Interesting concept.

Earlier versions of this include things like "Roblox" for example. It looks like a fun block game where you put blocks together, but I've seen someone perfectly simulate the physics and feel of "The longest yard" in quake becuase you can write code to make literally your own games out of it with block graphics and JPG's for surfaces and the UI.

Something more advanced where someone builds their own ideas is pretty cool.

Space engineers is a step up from Roblox. You can script bots to salvage the enemies ship on their own. Literally a bunch of thrusters and equipment blocks to make it function, and then you can PROGRAM the game to have this small ship latch on and start grinding away, and when it pops out the other side it's programmed to return to the ship and continue. It also discriminates between factions.

Mine craft does this concept too at this point by modders, the DEVs have even concidered allowing MODs to easily be installed helped by them.

For CCP to do something on this concept they'd have to be practically unpaid employees lol.

Oh, I perfectly understand, Hal Morsh — a mission like this requires courage, skill, and heroism… qualities you are clearly lacking. Have you forgotten you're one of the bloody immortals!?

NASA doesn't have to make a profit, just work within the budgets allocated to them of TAXPAYERs money.

While interesting to read, I am sure CCP couldn't operate the way NASA does. CCP is trying to get spaceships to explodeBlink

They have been doing that for decades and decades. Contracting, subcontracting, it's a government agency and all US government agencies do this. For a time, I was an inspector for a subcontractor that made electronics for NASA, Boeing, Lockheed Martin to name a few. That is just how they operate, have always, at least how it does in a democratic republic where the government doesn't own everything.

No they won't. They can't do that or they wind up with potential lawsuits. It's why mmo's mostly quit taking volunteers to do any real work about 15 years ago after a big scandal with helpers wanting to be paid in real $$ after putting time in simply helping other players in an official capacity on behalf of the company. Other mmo's dropped volunteers left and right after that, such as in UO I recall well, as well as in EQ1 etc. I think it started/happened in AC1 if I recall correctly.

As for other developers working on EVE, all you need to do is get a little involved in the GDC to realize in most cases games are all built using much 3rd party middle-ware. I think CCP has mostly kept everything in-house, apart from some of the typical components by M$ and videocard manufacture tools and such, but most developers use things like speedtree among the many other code licenses and software packages acquired from vendors.

I'm in it for the money
