How do I armor tank and get good DPS?

Howdy,

I've been with EVE for over 10 years and 99% of the time has been spent flying shield tankers. I have zero issues putting together a ship with DPS and shield tank. Now, over the years, the mechanics for armor tanking has changed some with the introduction to the Armor Resistance Shifting Armor Hardener (that's a mouth full). I've been trying to integrate my ship fitting methods used on shield tankers to armor tankers. Yes, I can still get insane DPS; however, the armor tank flat out sucks. Between the really slow rep time of the armor repairer module and the subpar resists, I'm lead to wonder if being able to armor tank and output good DPS is even possible. It would seem to me that one is stuck trying to achieve DPS OR achieve an armor tank.

Most of the ships I fly are Caldari-based (Gurista's, Caldari Navy, Mordu's Legion, and Sansha's). All of my fits are designed to be in favor of DPS while maintaining a decent shield tank for running missions in Caldari space. I'm getting bored of missiles and drones and want to fly Serpentis. I've used EFT to sketch up possible fittings and I simply cannot get a good tank and DPS combo. I've started running missions for a new corp; so, I'm stuck with level 2's for now. I want to try the Vigilant with blasters and an AB. I suppose a speed tank is what I should outfit for? I know Serpentis are geared more for PvP with the webber/warp sram bonus; but, their damage output is more desirable than Gallente ships.

Thanks in advance for the tips/advice.

If I am shield tanking, I like to see all resists close to 75% or better. For cruiser DPS, around 400 or so. So far, the Gurista ships are the only ones I can get near 80% resists with 750+ DPS. But, as I said, I want to fly a hybrid boat (no moa).

I have flown most all faction ships with the exception of SoE, Blood Raiders and Serpentis. I have always admired the serpentis ships, just never got around to flying them.

paper dps != applied dps

armour ships applied dps is usually superior due to more mids for ewar and tracking mods.

So while your shield gank thorax is putting out 800 DPS it can only do so at 2km range and if the target is bigger than itself and not moving.

This is what I came up with for a level 2 mission runner. It has over 500 DPS and the resists are where I want them. I can swap the rails for neutron blasters and add a webber if I want to go that route. I'm trying to keep the faction mods to a minimum. Once I get into level 3 missions, I'll most likely switch over to a Navy Brutix.

I initially read the thread title as something like: "How can I shot web?"

After reading it, I have not changed my opinion. After ten years in the game you must have at least *some* idea of how to armour tank a ship.

Assuming this isn't a troll, it is totally unnecessary to use more than one slot for tank on level 2 missions when you have that much DPS.

This has 140 more DPS and will do level 2 missions much faster as most of your time will be spent in warp. This fit should also be more than sufficient for level 3s, for the more difficult Angels missions you can switch a mag stab or TE for an explosive hardener.

Primarily for PvE. The blaster setup (with T2 webber) I'm using seems to be working good. I just need to get used to the different fighting style of gun boats versus the missile boats I mainly use. Heck, this thing should handle level 3's alright. Seeing 81% resists on therm/kin which is fine by me. Getting about 440 DPS with blasters alone. Drones add another 150 DPS. My hybrid gun skills suck atm; so, their DPS will get better with training.

For those who think using a Vigilant is overkill for lvl 2 agents, you're right. However, this just means I can burn through lvl 2 missions faster and move on.

Using rails is preferred as flying to the target with blasters takes more time than shooting them from range with slightly less DPS.

You assume right, this is not a troll post. I like your outfit. I did modify it for blaster use, though, I also dropped a mag stab II for the armor resistance shifter mod. Seeing 616 DPS with guns + another 145 DPS with drones.

You have 500 dps and are worried about resists? With that dps output and running level 2's all you need is a T1 armor rep and to hell with the tank mods you should be in and out so fast that resist mods are virtually irrelevant.

However if you are more concerned with the PvP side of things while running missions then forget all that crap up there ^.

10 years it's a long period of time though ... but i've heard about new ship "Hecate" and you probably too.

Meanwhile you're asking Vigilant for lvl2 ? I do smell a certain trollizm here.

Yes, I have heard of the Hecate. Who hasn't? I am not trained to fly that ship yet. I'll get into it sometime down the road.

I didn't need help fitting for lvl 2. I just needed help in how to outfit armor tanking ships. Since most of the mid slots on shield tankers are reserved for buffing the tank, I figured the exact same thing for armor tankers for their low slots. The problem I ran into was finding a balance of DPS/WPN mods and tanking mods. Now that some others have shed a bit of light on this, I am currently running lvl 3's in the Vigilant. I swap between blasters and rails, which both provide good fun and a challenge compared to missile boats. Not saying missile boats aren't fun, they just take away the challenge of running missions.

I am not a troll. I've been so focused in one aspect of the game, I had forgotten how to do other things (ie, outfit armor tanking ships).

Thanks peeps for the tips and advice! Fly Safe o7
