Year or two back CCP showed us plans for new damage model in EVE. I remember seeing pictures where shield and armor damage are shown in completely different way. What happened to these plans? Are they still coming or is this project cancelled?

2012 Fanfest. 1h58min mark. I had almost forgotten about this. Atleast this is what I think he is talking about, but it could be something else.

The ships hung in the sky in much the same way that bricks don't.

Wow! That video brought back some memories! Although, I do have to ask, where is it? The interface, visible damage and everything else? Where the heck is all that? I guess like WiS, CCP decided to abandon those projects, too. *majorsadface*

The UI in that image made me think someone photoshopped a capture from ED.

At this point I'm not sure why CCP keeps showing off features they know damn well they cannot deliver. Every fanfest they have presentations about what they would like to include and 90% of it never sees the light of day. More astonishing is the players who, despite being disappointed year after year, act as if CCP is actually serious about any of these types of improvements.

None of that was ever going to happen and CCP knew this when they showed it off. They just want to get people excited because I guess it would be deemed boring if their presentations were honest and practical.

Why have this...

"This year at EVE Fanfest: More of the same"

When you can flaunt this...

"The year at EVE Fanfest: Player piloted fighters!!! Actual ship explosions on destruction!!! Flying into low orbit and fighting within planetary atmosphere!!! Player avatars can now have sex with each other on stations!!! Exciting!!!"

CCP made that image so you probably aren't far off, this one also made by them.

I swear I saw a planetary flight demo few years ago. Also ambulation demo and even ship painting demo and tessellation demo. This damage model isnt really something worth talking about.

Then there is that hi-res texture pack. It was said that they even had some assets ready at that point...

I mean, there are dozens of pages of us bi***ing about relevant things these days, it's good to bi**h about irrelevant things from time to time for a change, agree?

That's not to say I don't want to see better damage model than that smoke trail from late 199x, or that pack, or something else... But eh.

Except the thing about the high res textures was more of a technology problem. The recent download on demand change allow them to do that now, but they need to make all the other textures that aren't already high res, and otherwise QA said textures to be truly ready.

In fact most of these are an internal technology problem, though I have no idea why the 2008 walking in stations demo-model was COMPLETELY scrapped

It was scrapped in favor of fixing game mechanics. Players felt it was more important for the dev team to focus on fixing the game than adding a new "thing" to the game.

For a start they could just give each ship model about 8 internal points that weapons fire targets. Rather than 1. So that when you fire weapons at a target, you get impacts across the ship, not just a single impact point. That alone would make a huge visual difference to a ship under fire.

Considering they scrapped it before Incarna, this argument doesnt fit anywhere. As Xercodo said, it was a technology problem and they wanted to do it all with new shinies they had at that moment. Like the clothing system that did not fit into previous technology. They wanted it to be excellent, but gravity is not just a theory. If you want to get high, you will have to hold tight. They could have done that easilly by forgetting about delivering only one room and work on more assets and then delivering them later with bigger, more similar to demo, Incarna.
