i know little about the whole game yet, but one thing i noted, drone ships are afk isk makers.1 solution for bots and AFK rattting player is to make the drone attack only those targets that are locked. For all I know 99% of afk player rating use drone ships cuz drones are a kind of bot for itself. My neighbor who is also a player of eve online makes about 1bi a day with each of its rating accounts using ishtars, which he land in anommalies and then turns to the playstaion to play another game. Only in moments that he is really attentive to the game are gang roams and sov fleets which does not happen every day. so even though I may be wrong at some point and a lot of drone players will argument that this will broke the game or that will make other ships to op i sugest drone ships only attack locked targets. But I know I'm not entirely wrong.

people will just fit auto targeting, job done

besides, drone aggro, triggers moving from anom to anom sorta makes 100% afk a bit difficult

I really don't see a problem. If you go afk while ratting, you're opening yourself up to problems: Ganks, losing drones when the NPCs switch to them, negated isk making, etc.

Changing drone mechanics just to deal with some semi-afk ratters probably wouldn't go over very well.

If you want to make the game more engaging and discourage AFK behaviour, all that is needed is some increased risk. Make NPC spawns a little more random in power - sometimes weak ones spawn and sometimes harder ones - and very rarely spawn some Drifter-level uber-NPC that the player has to run from. Attentive players will warp away easily and AFK ones will come back to find themselves floating in a pod.

The AFK running of missions, mining and hauling could also be similarly discouraged by the risk of a rare yet powerful NPC appearing. In fact, perhaps these Drifters will turn out to be such a mechanism.

The Op is right in that he or she doesn't know much about the game. "Drone ships" are simply the most popular, but by no means are they unique. I use them because they are easy (I use Navy Vexors, Ishtars are better, but Navy Vexors are so cheap who cares if you lose 3 or 4 per week, THANKS GALLENTE FW FARMERS).

But if you take away auto agress from drones (this is what you are asking for OP), people will just fit auto-target modules. If you make drones only attack via the 'attack target' command, people will just fit ECM bursts, set drones to aggressive and orbit a drone at 500 meters (thus when a drone gets within 8km of any npc, that npc will be hit by the ECM burst making it a valid target and the drones will attack)

If you do find a way to eliminate semi-afk drone ratting, people will switch to smartbombs . If you 'fix' smartbombs, people will start doing more of what I'm doing right now, using "Auto-Targetting" missiles (they are way less 'afk' than drones, with auto target missiles you have to click a button every 5 minutes, sounds carpal tunnel inducing to me!! lol).

The fact is, EVE is a very 'semi-afkable' game, it's not drone's 'fault'.

If someone is doing something in-game that you don't like, overwhelming DPS is usually the cure.

We once played a game where our logi had to try and keep the AFK ratter alive while our DPS tried to take him out. If you have a problem with an AFK ratter have some fun with him. Smile

Whether you're right or wrong isn't the issue here. Anomaly ratting is damn boring and you can be certain that forcing players to select every target, no matter how small, and press F1 isn't going to do gameplay any favours. Players will always find more efficient ways to complete monotonous tasks; why try to impede that? Furthermore, trying to force even more mundane routines on players isn't going to win their hearts.

If you find yourself wanting because your neighbour is prepared to take more risk than you are and is reaping the benefits by enjoying a lazy lifestyle, the onus is on you to step-up your game!

Don't pick on my favorite ships!

If there are 30,000 characters logged in to the game, I bet 20,000 of them are AFK at any one time.

Go rant about them. Just leave off my beloved drones and the ships that carry them.

I've probably been flying Ishtars for this kind of things and all kinds of other 0.0 shenanigans for close to 1.5 years now and yes, it's broken.

They brought drones in line with other weapons but kept stuff like automatic aggro and assist which makes very little sense to me but at the same time I am kind of glad you can do the most boring activities mostly AFK, you know, much like shooting POSes or capturing sov nodes.

I have carefully observed these so called "AFK ISK" machines and noticed a core flaw in your argument. The targeting systems present within the enemies that hold the juicy isk are intelligent and can react to a drone assault. The bulging and top heavy economy is perhaps more of a sickness and the AFK ISK a symptom.

NPCs aggroing drones doesn't work 99% of the time in 0.0, or at least not in Serpentis space.

Since all you know is 99% are afk, feel free to shoot them.

Unless that chance of meeting the 1% that aren't afk is enough to stop you.

Then continue with the "CCP please nerf" threads.

i know little about the whole game yet,

That's all you're saying with your post.

I've never botted in eve and I don't even know the name of any bot programs in eve. I do have friends that have pointed out bots for me so I could watch and they have told me about capabilities. I also have +20 years of computer experience which includes casual programming. I have also seen bots in online games for that time period.

I can't imagine anyone is is botting with drones when turret ships are so much superior for bots. From a bot programmer's perspective drones are too unpredictable and unreliable when compared to a ship with turrets. You don't have to worry about turrets wandering off from the ship or getting destroyed or having to wait for your turrets to come back to the ship like you do with drones. Botting with drones just sounds stupid.

I know quite a few people that have made +1b a day while almost completely AFK in fields mining (certainly more AFK than the afktars you're talking about).

I know people who make billions a minute while AFK (market manipulation) or tens of billions a month with a little effort a week (PI chains).

So there's some more things to rage about in your next post.

EDIT : Auto targeting missiles can be relatively effective.

The problem is more to do with the afk-able nature of pve content in eve, not the manner in which it's run. Give npc's more power, better AI and see what happens then (and yes, drifters show that better AI is coming to all npc's).

Great. Now CCP will want to nerf auto-targetters before anyone ever uses them.

Why do we have auto-targetters in Eve again?

Those types of things only happen if I see them in space and they experience it directly. Like any other change.

Troll pvp the devs, change the game. Good times.
